Amongst candidate names occurring at least 5 times within party, distinctively Tory names include Simon, Caroline, Laura, and Robert. Distinctively Labour names include Alex, Michael, Matt, Josh, Joe, and Dan. James and Andrew are common to both but lean Tory; Chris and Sarah lean Labour.

Did your research manage "to secure democratic values, institutions, and good governance"? Quite the impact case study if it did!

"All things for all people" sounds a bit like securing for the workers by hand or by brain the full fruits of their industry and the most equitable distribution thereof that may be possible upon the basis of the common ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange, no?

Tories’ internal polling says they’re confident of hanging on in 80 seats, and maybe they can win another 60. Come on, Britain, you’re better than that.

I read on Wikipedia that "Larry has served during the premierships of five prime ministers: David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak", and suspect that this sentence will be updated pretty soon.

The challenge is to choose 20 books that greatly influenced you. One book per day, for 20 days. No explanations, no reviews. Just covers. 17/20 #booksky

Gavin Jacobson (who now works for the New Statesman) wrote a cracking PhD at Oxford a few years ago on fraternité in the French republican tradition (which neatly showed what a misunderstood concept it is).

"Whatever he considers to be beneficial to the commonwealth and the dignity of divine, human, public, and private affairs, he shall have the right and the power to do and to execute." From the statute that conferred absolute power on the Roman emperor (*Lex de imperio Vespasiani*, section 6). 😬

"No, no, you're not getting it," he said. "I'm not Mr Clever. I'm Mr Clever*ly*." - What's the difference? He sighed. "Mr *Clever* would just invariably be clever. No one would ever say 'he did that cleverly' - it'd be assumed." - So to be Mr *Cleverly*... "I have to be stupid, almost all the time."

When I went to Twickenham a few years ago the England fans were singing it at half time, when they also did a little dance. It was quite strange.

I have long held that if I can’t make this academic career malarkey work out, I would like to be the person who writes the historical trivia for the commentators to recite as the Tour pedals its way through the various villages, etc.

It was when I realised I could watch an entire flat stage quite happily—in which, objectively, only the last few seconds had any bearing on anything at all—that I realised I probably needed to cut down.

Why wouldn’t Davey just tack to a broadly centre-right, but leaning to the right, position, in which we know he is thoroughly comfortable, insofar as he was a minister in the Coalition?
