As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).

The idea that you can separate land and water conservation from carbon emissions takes a particular kind of delusional thinking.

It's very hard to make art in a society where it is deeply ingrained that the serious work of your life is making money for other people and taking care of your loved ones, and art is a slightly self-indulgent hobby for yourself.

US media is puzzled that voters watched the debate and read their negative coverage of it and didn't broadly abandon a democrat for a fascist. This is a sign of a deep disorder in our political and news media

There was a decorated Colonel in WW2 named Richard Pine-Coffin (which his troops found morbidly funny given the situation)… wonder if there’s any relation?

it's actually extremely funny that we were told we can't use Wikipedia for research in the early 2000s but Wikipedia may be the only reason we even have a somewhat coherent historical record of culture and events from the last 25 years or so and will probably be needed to create future history texts

“We cannot trust tech companies that swear their innovations are so important that they do not need to pay for one of the main ingredients — other people's creative works. The ‘better future’ we are being sold by OpenAI and others is, in fact, a dystopia.”

Under all the math and engineering involved in this "advanced" plastic recycling process, my colleague @lisalsong.bsky.social found an inconvenient truth:

Not much is being recycled at all, nor is pyrolysis capable of curbing the plastic crisis.

Not now. Maybe not ever.

I realize there’s a risk I will one day be compared to that clip of Bryant Gumbel trying to figure out what the internet is, but I honestly just don’t think humans are going to discard storytelling — as in, I tell you a story I chose — which has been around as long as humans. I cannot believe it.

One thing a lot of beginner writers, creators, and artists don’t understand is that finishing projects is a separate skill from the skills of the craft. That’s why we say to start small, you can be great at prose and story, but you need to practice finishing to do it reliably.

"We see the hierarchies of traditional rural society, and because it’s alien and exotic, we see it as natural and idyllic, instead of merely a different system for organizing labor and wealth."

good analysis on the political economy of pastoral fantasies

#aiart generators have been producing over 35 million new images every day for over a year…

and not a single iconic, memorable thing has been produced.

So don’t worry, it will never replace artists.

Meta’s AI “opt out” is on #Instagram is absolute BS. You have to prove your work has been used to train the AI and provide evidence.

I got an opt out for ya… I’m opting out of the whole app.

it’s telling that everyone with a computer has had the ability to make infinite pieces of AI generated art for more than a year and there are literally zero AI images that anyone gives a shit about. same with music. same with prose. the fundamental meaningless of it all is an intractable part of it

An AI datacenter devours enough water and electricity for a whole city of people each day. A human artist only takes up as much electricity and water as any single human. This is why, even if we settle copyrights and such, AI will always be immoral. Just pay a human.
