Conservatives often counter that “no legislation > bad legislation” and there is some validity to that point. But it’s impossible to look at American society right now and conclude, “why isn’t the government doing less?!” The data is damning.

Every local race is different -- but some Democrats must be bolder about getting votes taken and focusing on those votes as dangerous for children, adults, etc. There are so many shootings that people are numb. How to remind people (in a non-exploitative manner)?

A charismatic politician has to decide gun violence is their #1 issue -- and there has to be a narrative. A small lobby has made ONE industry immune from responsibility. The public wants the regulations but this has never been a "one issue" for voters even after Sandy Hook.

The pro-gun lobby claimed "rights" and "liberty." Pro-safety is better than regulation but the effective language has yet to be used by any major politician. I think arms proliferation is excellent. But we need something easy to understand, Constitutional language if possible.

Alito and Thomas said bumpstocks should go to Congress -- but the ban can go to STATES and Congress. This Congress cannot pass anything (see below). In every state without a law, someone should be introducing a clear Bumpstock ban -- and force a vote/use language of gun safety.

Voters need it to be very concrete. Nixon signing Clear Air Act, EPA rule, courts overturn, and a consequence for the population? Voters don't like bumpstocks but most people imagine THEY are not directly affected by the violence.

I think about this a lot -- (1) is it possible to explain how Chevron would impact voters and (2) how can votes on bumpstocks happen (state AND national) happen now so that it can be a campaign issue at local, state, and national levels?

This is an excellent roundup of the bumpstock case from @drustevenson.bsky.social. Bad but could have been worse.

I'm reading the SCOTUS bumpstock decision and must admit that Alito's 2 paragraph concurrence is a relief. 😱 Thomas's opinion is a gun-fetish fever dream. But Alito sounds truly sad that people died in NE and seems to be pleading with Congress to change the law. Sotomayor's dissent spot on.
