Honest question: has the newsletter format genuinely worked out for anyone? Some people have obviously made big money, but normal people never read what they write & they’re presumably being sustained by sugar daddies. Meanwhile everyone good just… disappears.

The wild thing here is that it is pretty clear how to weather a bad-faith mob attack - Don't give a single inch - Senior staff particularly protect and defend individual victims - Actively attack the mob as bad-faith, racist, liars, etc Climategate really taught us this more than a decade ago

"set out a vision for a public higher ed system that embraces its role in reproducing an economically secure middle class constituted in terms of merit, a willingness to contribute one’s labor, achievement obtained during one’s lifetime+genuine service to the public, rather than privilege by birth."

a thing I’ve really woken up to in recent years is the extent to which capitalists refuse to pay employees fairly as an ideological matter. it’s not maximizing profit or reallocating capital. it’s not even greed, per se. it’s just power.

Today, @econmarshall.bsky.social identifies the hierarchical social theory that underlies the current hollowing out of public universities.
What we need instead, he argues, are homogeneous institutions with heterogeneous student bodies.

The more I think about this the more I think an actually-good writer could do quite well weaving a budding social uprising into the extant text of P&P and have it explode, shoving aside the previous climax of the novel.

I believe there’s evidence of this from the common ownership literature when supplier and customer have common shareholders, but not in the general case of “all management is just about screwing workers & otherwise they’re phoning it in.”

One thing the people who study private equity haven’t yet considered (to my knowledge) is the following dynamic: the people who run airlines aren’t interested in doing a good job, so they have no incentive to switch away from their supplier when the supplier is doing the same thing.

Within a few hours, we're all going to be burned out on the Steamboat Willie jokes, indirectly demonstrating why Disney fought so hard to extend its copyright: Mickey Mouse is a boring-ass character no one would bother to copy.

I thought this aspect of the Gage book was convincing: he scientized criminal investigation in the 20s-30s and got a bunch of laws that gave federal criminal jurisdiction for crime that crossed state lines. That success is why they turned to him for the red scare.

The well-being of 25 year olds doesn’t matter because they’ll be better off when they’re 35. Classic weaponization of the banal facts of economic life cycles, and like all DC elites, he doesn’t care about social reproduction. Achieving stability at 25 is very different than achieving it at 35!

It’s definitely not what Carey means in his article, because in that case there’s no out of sample validity or effect at the margin, unless you rely on employers systematically guessing wrong, ie assuming that non-elite grads of elite colleagues are elite.

My view could fairly be summarized by your second clause, but I don’t agree that the “signaling” model works because its premise is the degree denotes underlying ability. All of these models assume labor market (and other) outcomes are caused by individual characteristics, but we know that’s false.
