NASCAR's original intent was to enable your average joe to be able to obtain a stock production car and slap some numbers on it and, figuratively and literally, they were off to the races. IIRC the last true non-corporate, completely independent NASCAR team was in the early 1980s.

It's even worse than that! Chris von Erich was the smallest/least-capable, due to chronic illness, but supposedly the most dedicated to the love of wrestling out of all the five brothers, actively breaking bones during matches in attempt to resurrect the then-in-freefall good name of the family

I was talking to one of the friends who grew up with me and when I was talking about all of this, he had no idea what WCCW was either. However WCCW was, for a short time, a worldwide sensation that aired its shows over in Japan and Israel. Just not to the town I lived about 200 miles away.

What's crazier is I lived right next door to where all of this took place and never knew about any of it. I grew up in one of the secondary towns of Amarillo territory which was sold off in the early 80s, before WCCW started to develop momentum.

I grew up in the middle of this nonsense. Raised in a church that embraced the Satanic Panic like none other. Our youth pastor claimed to be an ex-satanist who escaped from the largest Satanic cabal. Of course, he was just a grifter who ran off with the church coffers.

Here's what I built and have still available for sale. For $400 for the pair. Real wood salvaged from old pallets that were discarded along the roadside. 8" Dayton drivers. Facmogu midrange/tweeter with copper phase plug. 1st-order series crossover @550Hz. Flat response from 32Hz to 20,000Hz.

For those curious, there is nothing phenomenal or magical about these speakers. It's two 4" woofers, one of them running full-range and the other has a low-pass filter (a simple wire-wound copper inductor) at 200Hz. Which is really something considering the Fs on these things is probably ~120Hz.

This is 100% true. Word of mouth is no replacement for hustling and shilling and promoting your own work. Just because one person's work exploded onto the scene with little to no effort on their part in terms of promotion just means they jumped into that single-seat boat before you did.

Personally I find SomethingAwful's continued existence to even more shocking. At least Newgrounds has enacted the collective effort to remain relevant. Something Awful's forum exists only due to their collective, obstinate effort of pretending they're still relevant.

I was just wondering about this! I went and saw this in the theaters in 1989. Around 1994, the only commercially available copy I could find of UHF was a videocassette release at Media Play -- and even that was in EP format! Anyway, thanks for the great movie and memories, Al!

Now that I think about it, 1970s/1980s TBS didn't censor their stock of classic MGM/WB cartoons -- not as much as ABC/NBC/CBS would. This is why I remember Mammy Two-Shoes and even a lot of blackface gags. My mother slapped me at the dinner table for repeating one from Droopy.

Full disclosure: My childhood hero was Popeye. Where I grew up, we had only the Big 3 and limited cable. My daytime cartoons were all curated by TBS. When relatives showed up claiming that GI Joe and Transformers were cartoons that aired daily where they lived, I did not believe them.

As far as cities go, San Diego is considered pretty conservative. Probably because it's adjacent to the largest USMC installation in America. Lots of Marines do their time at Camp Pendleton, get married, and settle down while there. So, safe to assume most everyone is home watching you-know-what.

...this is my San Diego airport ritual. Probably the most torturous thing to those recruits is that they know someone is watching them from the airport bar savoring a Blue Hawaii or a margarita and just laughing while they're getting smoked by an enraged DI.
