As a programing this reminds me are how people think that programing is just typing.
The hard part of art isn't getting the image from your head into the paper it's getting the image in your head in the first place.
Honestly, and as harsh as this may be, they kinda deserve this, like imagine getting mad about criticism for the work you didnt really spend time on and after the art director kept telling you to fix the mistakes that you fail to actually adjust
I'm not enthusiastic for the day when AI will understand what you're asking without the numbskull hired to talk to it, but at least stories like this can serve to taint the waters and maybe inspire a mote of hesitation each time AI rears its head in a studio
I really hope "AI Mania" is rightly dismissed as the fad I feel it should be, but I'm worried some companies are still going to ice-skate uphill with this one because "minimum effort = maximum profit." I dunno, it feels like it could all go one way or the other at this junction.
this story gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside me as it pretty much give me hope that the AI artits stuff will someday just be phase we grow out of.
Well. This is admittedly comforting to the degree that it will resolve as another ill- advised fad forgotten but for nostalgic comic references by latenite talk show hosts.
Iโm way behind the times. Is a Prompter a person who drives these AI machines to (hopefully) product the desired results? Like a translator? How could anyone who knows what theyโre looking for or any designer not be better at this?

What makes me laugh is that these people hiring AI bros think that they can just "slightly adjust" what's generated.
Like, that's not how it works. It just makes a whole new thing each time.
I personally love seeing techbros treat AI as a magic box that can do anything, it's all the sweeter when they realize that a minutely complicated logic puzzle is too much for these programs to handle.
If I gave an AI this video's words as a prompt, it would just explode and produce garbage

A lot of comic strips farm out the art bc itโs repetitive to them. The comic fills in the story. It became a huge pain to type radiology reports when managers decided to farm dictation out to nonEnglish speakers. So we made macros on a computer to speed things up. We entered the final touches

I guess you need more intelligence than your AI & BTW ppl who have been using AI for many years could help this state of affairs if anyone were listening.
I remember doing art direction for a small indy game project and having to sit down with one of the artists who was very talented and just didnโt have much game experience. Having to teach them a new visual language was easy because they at least understood the basics.
They canโt take criticism yeh but even more importantly they just literally CANโT EVEN DO the job. I feel like the butthurtness levels of not being able to work with necessary criticism are just them deflecting cause theyโre completely unskilled in the first place *for most part.
Currently AI could be used as inspiration. In a "search internet for inspirational photographs" sort of way. Everyone can do AI prompting. It is just a tool not a job.
I feel your pain.
I imagine engineers will eventually figure out how to integrate iterative development into AI appropriation but the main problem will remain, these hacks still wonโt know the fundamentals of creating art and working collaboratively.
Adding to this: Iโm a digital copywriter, and was just hired by a fairly well-known beverage brand to rewrite their websites specifically because they were unhappy with the job ChatGPT was doing.
The hype will fade, talent wonโt.
Counterpoint--there are already multiple AI tools (MidJourney 6.0, Stable Diffusion using several different interfaces to cite two) that allow you to take an image you already created and just edit one piece of it, so part of the problem is *those people also didn't even know how you use AI tools*.
I can't help but imagine the "prompters" adding feedback straight to the prompt.

Honestly like, I know for a fact that if I stomped into an industry I had NO part in and just go "I can do it better, and by that I mean a machine will do it, but you should hire me for your job" I'd fuck it right up.
I feel everyone *should* know that.

The biggest scam was to tell people in the film industry or advertising that they are making art. They are not. AI is gonna replace you because it can do better. And by better I mean cheaper. That's ist. We'll rather lower our expectations than keep on giving money to poeple.
This was one of the things game devs in my circles kept repeating. โThese plagiarism boxes and their operators cannot refine or iterate.โ Iteration is such a key part of production that those boxes shouldnโt even be considered.
Yay! AI art failure! What I wonder, as I'm getting my portfolio together, is that you can see a similar style in an artist's works. Wouldn't it all be just random styles with AI art?
It was an a-ha moment a couple weeks ago when I heard it pointed out that generative AI is literally unable to edit, and unable to replicate output. It canโt do โsame picture but with these changes,โ each image is produced from scratch.

AI can be a useful tool, but it's ABSOLUTELY NO REPLACEMENT for a hand with a pencil/pen/stylus/mouse controlled by an artistic brain.
Honestly goes to show these positions in the work force need stronger requirements, such as a degree in the arts to at the very least be able to apply. So people donโt waste their time with weak-kneed ass AI bro babies, and actually get work done.
The limitation basically is that you can't use AI alone for stuff that requires fine-tuning, you'd still need a professional artist on staff or at least a professional photo editor. It can be a skill but not the only skill for a creative.

Even if we were to grant that there's a use case for AI in art (I'm iffy on this existing at all but I'm not an artist) AI can't help you do anything you didn't already know how to do without AI. This is further proof of that.
Honestly this points out the biggest failure of A.I. prompted stuff.
You can't narrow it down to a specific thing, or just change a little bit. And remakes the entire thing. And so when you need anything that has actual specificity it fails absolutely.
Can't imagine anyone could call themselves an "AI Prompter" without immediately bowing their heads in shame, much less in an attempt to get a job. Even worse, they were actually hired.
How could anyone take pride in labor that a machine does for you? Embarrassing.
Even in programming thereโs a similar story: โyouโre all going to be fired!!โ turned into โwould you like slightly more inventive autocomplete?โ In record time. Hope execs learn these lessons before tons more people pointlessly lose their jobs
I find the fact that they call these image generators "Artificial intelligence" an insult to actual AI that may be developed sometime in the future. A computer being given prompts, and than obeying those prompts, is NOT intelligence.
My favorite part of this is the complete (and predictable) inability of Ai bros to take basic critique. Every professional artist does this on a DAILY BASIS. Accepting valid criticism is the art school litmus test to see who can hack it in the industry. If you can't take it, you won't make it.
I predicted this is 2021 when clip alrogirthms were first introduced. People who don't know art principles and haven't practiced them will still be at a major disadvantage to those that do. So it comes down to ai assisted vs non ai assisted for actual jobs. Ai bros stay perpetually unemployed.
