Dual US and Canadian citizen. I fret about politics in both countries.

I think the press gets into a Beltway gossip bubble, much to the detriment of balance and fairness.

This is particularly true now that Conservatives are hell-bent on privatizing services. For-profit healthcare seems more accessible at first glance, but skyrockets costs for even simple procedures. My husband has 2 insurances, but still got hounded for costs that weren't covered.

Yes, and at some point, there would be a legal challenge to the ad-hoc primary process, and SC would find some way to disqualify the Democratic candidate.

March 23 1933, the Enabling Act becomes law in Germany, giving the chief executive power enforce his own laws without checks and balances. The passing of the Act marked the formal transition from democratic republic to totalitarian dictatorship. 6 months later, it was a 1 party state.

It sure looks like, according to SCOTUS, a president telling an executive branch official "I order you to break the law" cannot be criminal, since giving orders to people in the executive branch is an official act, and the fact that a president used this official act to order a crime doesn't matter.

Richard Nixon 1977: When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal. America 1977-2023: What, are you kidding? No way. Roberts Court 2024: Actually Nixon was right, and shouldn't have been in trouble for ordering the Watergate break-in, because orders are by definition official acts.

I'm trying to keep my spirits up, after the press overreacts to Joe's debate performance. Worse for me, though, are the SC rulings. SC has more power than the legislature or executive branch. Checks and balances my ass.

Yes, if you don’t like the choice between Trump and Biden, think of it as picking between Stephen Miller and Pete Buttigieg, Steve Bannon and Deb Haaland, Michael Flynn and Lina M. Khan, Alex Jones and Jessica Rosenworcel, or Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Both sides are not “the same”

Judiciary appointments and agency staffing are two huge reasons I’ll be voting for Biden despite the many, many issues I have with him. Both have impacts way beyond a presidential term & often have life or death level consequences. I’m not voting for a person, I’m voting for a path.

Women are five times more likely to be killed by an abusive partner when their abuser has access to a gun

But according to originalism, the state didn’t try to stop people from hurting women in the past, so it can’t try to stop people from hurting women in the present

As Schumer pointed out, this ruling was just about whether anti-abortion MDs had standing to sue the FDA. Believe me, different groups will keep trying to overturn access to this drug.

I guess it's good to keep tabs on the ways that the religious right can justify support for Trump. I have stopped calling them Christians, because their support of Trump is really idolatry.

I think of the quote at the beginning of Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death. He cites Huxley's belief that our undoing would be via our pursuit of entertaining diversions.
