I see loads of papers calling this a victory for the left when in fact all that happened is the RW vote was split and in a first past the post system that rewards a party that stays together and keeps its vote total intact. The whole thing is really worrying IMO

Although the primary system here is particularly poisonous given that it delivers up the most extreme candidate much of the time and most of the seats aren’t really in play ever. So the primary voters get to choose the rep and the opinions of moderates essentially don’t matter.

That’s what always happens in these kinds of elections. Relatively moderate people in swingy seats who have to appeal to everyone lose their seats while the more extreme people in very safe seats (who only have to worry about their own flanks) get reelected. See the same in the US.

That’a not really the point though is it? They are all competent. She’s a former senator who spent 4 years as VP. So maybe she is better. But that’s immaterial. The only question is if skipping over her would hurt with a key part of the democratic base.

Well yes but that was during a contested primary where Biden was on the ballot and he was seen by many as the heir to Obama. This would be a bunch of guys making a decision to throw out the people’s votes and skip over the obvious (and black) heir apparent. The two situations aren’t comparable.

I agree 100% but I live in a country where a large minority of the population will actively resist ANY measures to decrease the risk of COVID to themselves and others. This is the reality that we live in, not the one we wished we had.

Cops are not federal employees and for the most part neither are judges. They are employed by the states or towns they live and they set the policies. If Biden tried to introduce a mask mandate for local police it would be resisted and ignored by the states.

There are many things about the US that are not ideal. The Democratic Governor of NY is planning to introduce a ban on masks AND getting rid of sick leave for COVID. This whole thing is madness. We should be increasing access to these and not just for COVID. For all respiratory diseases.

Even for that, in the US it would be impossible to enforce nationally because adherence to restrictions has unfortunately become a political issue. I wore a mask all day today at work. I have no objection to masks but I also recognize the reality that this is not possible in the US right now

But what I meant by this is that in the absence of an effective vaccine that prevents transmission, no policies short of a prolonged shut down and a complete and permanent closure of the borders could stop the waves from coming every time it mutates (which unfortunately is often).

I agree with all of these but... - Mask mandates can't be enforced nationally and the public has no appetite. - Only useful if people will test. The Admin was handing out free tests and people didn't take them - Requires congressional action - Absolutely - Already exists for most healthcare
