It bears repeating that part of the reason the major parties love to do transphobia because they are bigots, yes, but also because it allows them to pretend they are doing something for women and thereby get out of doing anything real or meaningful.

Sauron, in The Lord of The Rings is a mysterious figure. I imagine him there at the top of his tower and suddenly see him for who he is. Today's homage to Tolkien...

There's an interesting problem in digital preservation, which is that preservation only exists actively. Only the things you actively move to new formats, survives. Community is probably the same way: it has to be actively maintained in order to outlive whatever spot it's currently in.

This is getting very sketchy for the Conservatives, they are in danger of playing second fiddle to Reform and giving Labour an easy ride. The thinking Conservative will vote Lib Dems to give Britain an effective opposition.

Reminder. The "Reform Party" is actually a private company with Nigel Farage as the majority shareholder. It's a bit dishonest to consider it a normal political party and I think it's problematic to let a private company stand candidates for public office

For all those on here who think Labour has a secret plan, Angela Rayner told the parties debate tonight categorically: “Labour would never seek to take the UK back into the EU.” So if EU membership is your aim, it’s Lib Dems or Greens.

@chadbourn.bsky.social looks like Labour candidate for Witney has said she will not be standing, not clear about a replacement. This could really improve chances of Lib Dems taking this strong Tory seat.

I think a lot depends on region/dialect. As a Brit from the Midlands I sound the "t" very easily. Slightly more formal diction, perhaps, but not robotic. A' all.

Cis lesbian here. Out going on 30 years, and I remember vividly how often the butch/androgynous dykes I knew in the 90s were grilled (& sometimes outright abused) by strangers in public bathrooms Obviously this is horribly transphobic. But a lot of cis women with short hair are also going to suffer

Your reminder than any rules insisting trans people are separated out in hospitals or anywhere else is actually insisting that *everyone* must be subjected to intrusive and offensive enquiries to satisfy a tiny minority of noisy bigots obsessed with something that's none of their damn business.

It's easy to forget how huge some countries are - Sudan, for example - because the Mercator projection makes it look way smaller. I wonder if we could fit all countries inside all countries in an infinite regression. Turtles all the way down.

She blended multiple subgenres and their tropes. Personally I feel her inclusion of sport narratives had much do with her success. No individual aspect of the series is unique or original, but the combination hit a sweet spot. I taught many boys, especially, who returned to reading thanks to HP.

They tried to avoid Chinese government intervention by pre-censoring anything potentially anti-Chinese, ironically disqualifying many Chinese authors without cause. As a result, China lost out because the World Science Fiction Society was too obsequious. Strange brew indeed
