There are 90K people here, and the council is giving $90K subsidy to property developers for every new house... every new house is costing us $1 each (plus cost of capital) that has to be cut elsewhere on the budget, so someone can have another luxury home away from the hoi polloi

Today, the same newspaper is outraged that the council pools are going to charge OAPs an extra $30 (160->190) for a swimming pass this year, and I'm just stunned at the lack of "connect these two stories" in the newspaper

Next time local businesstwats complain about losing A SINGLE PARKING SPACE for bike parking and that it will destroy their business, maybe go back a year after the bike lane is built and see if it did?

Next time a retail landlord demands the council cut down all the fucking trees on the high street so he doesn't have to clean his gutters, ask how much that costs ratepayers and why spending our money to increase his profits is more important than some nice trees in our built environment?

There are too many people who think joy is a zero-sum game, and that if they just take enough joy from others, maybe they'll get more. I like that they tried to use words like nerd and geek to steal our joy in our teens and instead we joyfully took that name to describe ourselves.
