you do not to be competent to do awful, terrible damage to a country. i strongly recommend people actually read up on the reality of Nazi governance. that we think of the Nazi state as somehow competent and efficient is a propaganda victory for the ages

It's one of the comforting lies people came up with to explain how people could support Hitler, or Mussolini. 'Well they ran a tight ship' is easier to live with than 'fascism was popular and people thought their ideas were good'.

That this reputation seems to rest largely on their success at murdering Jews says a lot, I think. The Holocaust becomes the analog to Mussolini's making the trains run on time.

The trains, in fact, did NOT run on time. And the real inheritors of Prussian militarized anal-retentiveness despised the sloppy Nazis.

Yeah, write a VRA that makes voting after 9 pm illegal and mandates ridiculously time consuming measures in "areas of concern" i.e. any cities. Kill the city vote. As an example. That doesn't require competence. It requires incompetence to ignore how obviously baffling stupid it is.

Absolutely. But when one reads the Times saying "polls show voters prefer Trump policies", those articles*never* explore that he is disastrously bad at policy. The press is fooling itself in acting as if what he'll do will look anything like any past Admin. It won't even look like 45, because

How 1930s worked and 2025s on will work: a minor party official wrote to AH, early 1930s to ask permission to seize power in his local area from less ardent party members. AH wrote back and said the most ardent supporters are those who seize power and enact changes locally without asking permission

I don’t know anything about wiring a house, but I sure as hell bet I could smash a circuit breaker and cut enough wires that nothing in that house would have electricity it’s a lot easier to ruin things than to make them work

the opening chapter of this talks about how unrestrained power has no need for rationality

"The greater the power, the greater the freedom in this
respect, and the less need for power to understand how reality is ``really'' constructed."

It's the truly stupid that have the most potential for doing real damage. Not the cold competent, who act somewhat rationally according to incentives.

Seriously, we're in the position we are to some extent because the entire Republican MO is to just not govern. Getting into government and then just not doing anything so it grinds to a halt is incredibly easy for them!
