i agree with greg and i’ll add that many of the liberal pundits doing the “ostentatiously sympathetic to trump voters” thing are engaging in their own form of condescension, projecting views onto people with whom they have no real contact or connection
some, maybe not many but then again perhaps many, liberal pundits also consciously or subconsciously don't mind trump voters playing bad cop to their good cop in terms of support of the "dark side of MAGA"
3/cont. But the point is, those folks are up these vile theories like hungry infants. They were very, very ready and easy to be turned from average people to evil, hateful murderers, by a man who by all accounts looked & sounded completely insane & ridiculous. WHY? There are evil people among us.
I remember one "MAGA guy in a diner" story set in the borough of Pittsburgh my dad's from--which is 70% Democrat and went overwhelmingly for Hillary when the election rolled around. They sought out the one jagoff in North Braddock who fit the profile they'd decided to write.
If it is an authentic critique from the left of how the establishment Democratic party has abandoned working class voters (to do the bidding of their Wall Street donors) for the entire 30 years since Bill Clinton's election, then we actually need a lot more of that.
Yeah, to me those articles always come off as "Hey look, these small town redneck morons aren't quite as dumb as we previously thought." Not to mention conservative media universally portrays liberals as pedophilic Satanic Hitlers.
It's hard to understand why the pundit class is so resistant to the most parsimonious conclusion, that these trump voters actually do want horrible things to happen to people who are not like themselves
They're also condescending to other libs, saying that they understand the MAGA voter on a higher, more nuanced level and that they're able to explain in a way people can't figure out for themselves.
I recall having similar feelings when reading that wave of stories about Trump fans or red states "voting against their interests." Some people just hate others more than they like more affordable healthcare.
I’ve lived in the South my entire life and I feel this in my bones. Most liberal pundits wouldn’t last one day where my family’s from. One round of cornbread racism and generational violence and they’d throw themselves straight into the hog pen.
Moreso for leftist pundits, who imagine that "the working class" is an amorphous mass of mildly racist white folks who are just waiting to unite behind some version of the DSA's economic policies.
Yeah - it's all a cover story. They can indulge their hateful impulses by attributing them to a fictional "real American" they discover in their own half-assed research, which is mostly just reading other half-assed researched columns.
they don’t want to acknowledge that the “working class” in 🇺🇸 is not mostly white Anglo men
but neither does the Democratic Party, which will chase those votes forever
