I’ve said this before but it still boggles my mind that when Nixon said “when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal” that was the checkmate that destroyed his reputation. And now half the country seems fine with Trump using the same idea as his opening gambit.
Trump's lawyer argued in court that Trump could have ordered a murder and be immune unless Congress impeached and convicted him while he was in office. So Trump believes a president can do anything and get away unless our broken Congress convicts.
B/C this is all so stupid....
Imagine Congress passes a law and the President signs that says "The President may not do X. 2 years in prison if he does." Trump (and some number of SCOTUS justices') view is that that president can turn around the next day and do X without consequence. It's absurd.
It think Congress and his party leadership realized the danger of that statement.
W trump, they are worried about alienating his base and thus losing their own power.
Sucks regardless
Last I was there, the Nixon Library had postponed the processing of documents that might contain correspondence with Trump during Nixon's post-presidential years working out of a Manhattan office.
