This means romance authors. This means poets. This means screenwriters and playwrights and actors of anything remotely risqué. And eventually, anything secular. They have no point of satisfaction until they’ve erased all of non-Christian expression.

After I read "The Road" (in 2009) I more or less stopped reading fiction entirely for about a decade. Since then mostly short stories, esp mysteries and noir (Christie, Chandler, Hammett, etc)

It's not a shot I typically am interested in, but this water tower is pretty much the only thing enough nearby that it's possible with, so I feel like I've got to try it. Any luck with the moon last night?

Photopills is helpful, it's the moon that's not. I need a rise that's both pretty much exactly at 120º, AND occurs during open hours for this park. May 22 was perfectly aligned but it rained. July full moon fits the bill, probably, barely. If that doesn't work out then July 2025 is the next one 🫤

Gotcha, gotcha. As a midwesterner I did not realize how aggressively the coast curves there. I guess for that matter I didn't appreciate how far south moonrise was today. I keep trying to get a moonrise near a locally famous water tower and keep getting stymied by weather, life.

Where do you take that moon-rising-over-Pacific shot from? (Boat? Peninsula? etc)

The Court actually cited that in paragraph 33 of its decision: "While the record demonstrates that Blakeslee regrets his misconduct, it also shows that he lacks sufficient insight into the origin of and motivation for his inappropriate behavior to effectuate positive change."

Both the decision and the board report use the vague term "deposited," so it's unclear. But the opinion also gives us this: after "deposit[ing] his feces into an empty Pringles can," "He then drove approximately 20 minutes from his home in Coal Ridge to Cambridge with the open can of feces."

Not much! The Supreme Court actually rejected the Board of Professional Conduct's conclusion that he did not target the victim-ad center. It also rejected their recommended sanction of a public reprimand, and suspended him for one year with six months conditionally stayed. So that's something.

After about 7 months of suspension, the Ohio Supreme Court today reinstated to the practice of law the guy who pooped in a Pringles can and threw it into a parking lot (of people he knew!)

He threw pooped-in Pringles cans at least ten other times.

(If I'm right about this—and I've checked the attorney rolls in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and the property and voter records in Hamilton. Clermont, and Warren Counties—it also shows, of course, that the Cincinnati Enquirer is perfectly willing to be complicit in the misinformation here.)

But here's the thing: As best I can tell, there is no attorney by that name, no property owner by that name, and no registered voter by that name. I don't think this person exists. I think we're being astroturfed here, and that shows just how much "convicted felon Donald Trump" DOES matter.

Somewhat related: the Cincinnati Enquirer published a letter to the editor from someone who says they're an attorney who had doubts about the Trump evidence, and that the conviction may have pushed them into the Trump column.

But here's the thing:

The mainstream SCOTUS beat is rotten to its core: days after January 6, 2021, the Alitos were interviewed by a Washington Post reporter on the Supreme Court beat about the upside-down “distress” flag flying at their house—but the paper decided it wasn’t a story and sat on it until today.

By the way, fellow Ohioans: Judge Shanahan, who bent over backwards to accommodate that police officer several times, and evidently did not really care about his "willful blindness" of law that's been settled since 1964, is running for the Ohio Supreme Court this fall.

A great result for free speech, a great result for the right to protest. Most of all, a great result for police accountability. This is the court of appeals saying that they don't get to play by different rules than the rest of us.

They've sent the case back down for a calculation of the sanctions award and a determination of whether Olthaus, his lawyers, or both, are responsible for it.

Today, I am pleased to report, the court of appeals reversed that decision, finding that Olthaus and/or his lawyers showed "willful blindness to the controlling legal standard," and that doing so "carries consequences."

My involvement ended when the Ohio Supreme Court forced the trial judge (Megan Shanahan) to unmask the officer (Ryan Olthaus). But the case continued. The defendants won a dismissal and moved for sanctions based on frivolous conduct. Judge Shanahan denied that motion.

Anyone who remembers me from Over There might recall the story about the police officer who tried to use a pseudonym to sue people who criticized him on the job. We were able to open the record and force him to use his real name

the shift during my lifetime from “police should not have to be outgunned” to “police should never face danger” to “police are empowered to fatally eliminate any self-identified threat” to “police should be celebrated for murder” has been genuinely shocking

Nothing you're saying is wrong, but it also has too much of "It's hard to do this right, so let's not do anything at all." I don't know what the right strategy and messaging is, but "Nothing is going to get a resignation" isn't it. If nothing else, move the Overton window toward Court reform!

So if you had a big smoke or a fast horse, you had a hell of a lot of land! He says he wished he'd kept a copy of the deed, but didn't think to at the time. I think they eventually closed it on from other legal descriptions.

My dad worked as a surveyor for a while in the 1970s, and part of the job was updating metes and bounds deeds to coordinates. He remembered a deed that described a property line as: Start at the old oak tree on the Smith farm and "go west, three smokes by horseback."
