lol i mean i guess it's true to the extent that most of the surviving old buildings were built for wealthier people so they were built pretty well. a lot of buildings built now for comparably wealthy people are built cheap to look more extravagant than they actually are

It's a big transition from being the kind of person who doesn't like to complain to becoming the kind of person who files complaints with the city. But it's a complaints driven process and there's a reason stuff gets fixed much faster in richer neighborhoods!

god this happens in east vancouver all the time, which is ridiculous because SOMETIMES they use those slow drip water bags that zip around the base of the sapling and sometimes they just don't? it's not that hard to put the water bag on there and check them like once or twice a month

fourth option to round out the mix: someone who has been out of grad school for nearly a decade or maybe more, and realized they have way too many books they won't revisit but wants to pass them along to others who will treasure them (it's me, i've done this)

it's taken me a long time to accept that and refocus on the joy of the process rather than the expectation that i must be naturally talented.

It's pretty bougie now but I came upon a section of housing called "the colonies" that I later found out were a 19th century workers affordable co-op housing initiative in the Stockbridge neighbourhood and they were beautifully laid out so everyone had equal access to the river

yeah most likely. i'm getting a lot better at just accepting who i am and how dull and small and frustrating my life keeps getting. but i have a safe and stable home, a garden, a nice dog, a few good friends, and a body that still mostly works most of them time so that's pretty good as a baseline π€·ββοΈ

The standard toaster oven I have now is still in great shape so I'm not in a rush to replace it, but at some point I'd like to replace it with an even more versatile all-in-one air fryer unit that still toasts bread

I strongly support the toaster oven idea. I've had one for many years and it takes plain toast as well as a pop down toaster, but you can also make a tuna melt or reheat frozen foods on a hot summer day without heating up your entire house like you would with the whole ass oven

my dad and uncle probably weren't the last surviving babies to be born in a ghost town (ocean falls) but there certainly weren't a lot more babies born there in the subsequent 15 years. it was a booming company town in the 50s but declined fast through the 60s-70s to basically nothing by 1980

yeah the babies/post-fledge teens have a funny little way of asking to be fed even as they're learning how to feed themselves, and the parents reply with a similarly kind of affectionate guttural response

Screening at 40 is not "early" screening. It's still a long shot away from protecting women like me, diagnosed stage 4 at 36, or another woman from work I'm close friends with, diagnosed at 30. Breast cancer is hitting younger and younger and heel dragging on early screening is killing us.

The Canadian government announced another round of settler designations. Importantly, this one include Amana, the settler construction arm. This is already a big deal and could get bigger if the US joins on this one.

This is such welcome news, and it makes me happy as a Canadian to see my own country step out of the shadow of US hegemony and do something right for a change. It's months late, but still welcome. I hope we continue to push further and faster, before the upcoming election.

Just FYI, in case you were wondering. I'm wondering because I think I might be having withdrawals from both clonazepam and prednisone despite only taking the clonazepam at a low dose every 3 days for the past few weeks to counterbalance the prednisone. Love to be this sensitive!!

It's not only safer and easier to do a slow taper, but it's actually significantly better in terms of long term side effects to do so as well. Like you'll come off of it faster and have basically zero side effects if you do it right but if you go cold turkey you'll break your brain long term/forever

I just looked up information on clonazepam withdrawal and tapering methods and everything I've seen is saying that going cold turkey enormously increases the likelihood of long term confusion, poor cognitive function, and poor memory. That explains a LOT about Jordan Peterson!!
