Apropos of nothing: it is still insane to me that Toyota released an EV that looks exactly like the RAV4, the top selling mid-size SUV in America, and they decided NOT to name it the RAV4e (or RAV3e since it's a tad smaller), but rather, the utterly unpronounceable bZ4x. 🤯🤷♂️
I drive a RAV4 and looked at switching to the BZx but the BZx is a turkey & would really disappoint switchers if it was called the RAV4e. I hope Toyota gets it right next time - I want to drive a Toyota EV.
I think Robert Frank's "Under the Influence" talks about the advantages of a hybrid like the Prius being distinct (a little weird looking) from an ICE model e.g. hybrid Accord. But I don't think this is it.
Contrast Toyota to Ford & GM who have launched EV versions of some of their most popular models (F150, Mustang, Silverado, Blazer, Eclipse etc), even when the new EV doesn't look like the corresponding ICE. That seems to be the right way to sell EVs... But what do I know? 🤷♂️
AFAICT, that whole series - mostly linked to China and Japan - electric vehicles is bZ names because it’s a collaboration with BYD (and if I’m not mistaken it’s using their batteries). But yeah it’s weird presentation for the west.
Japanese automakers have been slow to adopt and slow to believe in EVs generally. It shows in every action they take, including hydrogen hedging, but also naming conventions.
And you can’t buy the thing anywhere, at least not here in Canada. It’s available in only two provinces.
I bought my first non-Toyota in 15 years last fall, because I was dropping the Prius for a full EV and they wouldn’t tell the BXVX or whatever it’s called here.
Constantly being reminded that the bZ is there because they think Beyond Zero is a great sequel to their "self-charging EV" ads fills me with endless disgust.
