Bored of these interesting times. Disappointingly law-abiding. Silence is complicity. Anger is an energy. No one is illegal but apathy ought to be. Punch fascists. Join a union. If you don't know, keep it neutral (she/they).

No one involved in climate science or advocacy "needs to acknowledge" that mass extinctions result in new life millions of years later. They know that! They're trying to reduce human suffering, they're not confused about how geologic time works.

This. The accident of my birth in a wealthy country doesn't bestow me with any more rights than any other human. On the contrary, it requires me to be aware of my relative good fortune. I can't abide nationalists. They'll doom us all to an unpleasant end, if we're not careful.

Recording a should-not-be-surprising moment when I realise there's a(nother) thing where the US is more pro-social than the UK. I got good overtime pay in the '80s/'90s but nowadays I talk to younguns who are doing 12h shifts on a Sunday for minimum wage on a zero hours contract. We are the pits.😡👊

Use a stick or crutch(es) for any non-trivial walking. Hop everywhere for a while and you might just get your ankle back. Short-term annoyance for long-term gain.

Liberals are not on the left. This is a really important distinction if fascism is to be beaten, because liberals prefer it to socialism and are helpless against it.

Think some of it is the siren call of contrarianism, a bit like some clinicians showed their arses during the pandemic. "They think I'm a liberal so I have to confound their expectations. Also, I have nothing to lose if fascism.. And I'll get so many hate-clicks! <types furiously>"

They're even worse at rating whole countries because my spending is your income and they cannot get their heads around that. What do you mean, screwing the workforce is killing our customers? The magical customers that live on the moon and get their money from Mars, presumably.

They don't do any reading! Unless it's to work out what the people who pay them want them to say. It based on nothing but vibes and their pay cheques. Ridiculous way to run anything but that is the problem of power. Tough to solve.

Ratings agencies are an actual scam (the consumer stuff is just daft and bizarre). They're paid to rate their customers' products. If they did it properly there'd be other agencies offering grift and they'd go out of business.... cont'd

It's not hallucinating! It knows what a citation looks like, it knows where they appear in text, so it invents citations to put in its text. It can mimic a bad student but never a competent one because it cannot know anything. It has no objects to associate with its tokens.

Whatever it is, we know it's not what LLMs do. They resemble human style thinking in an inevitable tendency to system-justify because so much of its absorbed content is system-justification.

But really, it's just this very old trick & people fooling themselves: softwarecrisis.dev/letters/llme...

LLMs don't know what the source materials mean. How can they judge whether they were used well. Had this problem marking someone else's exam. "Award a point for each of these words". The student's had worked out if they scribble down every word they can think of they'll get top marks. 🙃

What this article leaves out is that if you hand your unlocked phone to a police officer, they can legally search it. Unless companies develop a method that allows you to show officers insurance cards and driver license without unlocking the rest of your phone, don't.
