It is hard to describe the density of the pigeon and rodent population in and around New York's Central Park. The vast amount of food dropped daily by visitors feeds enormous populations.
I hope all the asshats who were so sure he should "fly free" are happy now. Yeah, all things being equal, it's better for animals not to be in captivity. All things weren't remotely equal here.
