I just don’t get what the “I can’t bring myself to vote for Biden” people think will happen if their plan comes to fruition. None of them seem to care about The Revolution beyond abstraction, much less have an alternative system to promote. I don’t even see leftists advocating for the Green Party!

The way that I look at it is, what does anyone get by giving their unqualified support for a candidate in July? It probably won't mean anything, but there is at least the hope that someone hears the message, "people are really pissed off and if you don't change, you're going to lose this election."

A lot of them are probably cis and white and secure in their housing and actually will be fine under Trump. Can’t say the same for myself!

I mean, my household is having conversations about third parties. Down ballot matters more anyway. Biden no longer supports trans kids and wants to close the border, and he isn't doing anything about the courts. Most folks feel so frustrated because it really feels like he's not currently fighting.

I know that this involves generous rounding, but the Venn Diagram between "Leftists that can't bring themselves to vote for Biden" and "MAGA voting for Trump no matter what" is a single circle.

I gave up (futility) but used to talk to a bunch of 30-ish "not gonna vote"ers. They were hard-core Maoist tankies who insisted China is a workers' paradise & anything bad you hear about Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, Tiananmen, Tibet, or Uyghurs is pure bougie propaganda.

I'm sure there are real terms for it but it's pragmatic vs aesthetic. Only one of them builds power

They are the same people, or related to, who couldn’t vote for Clinton either. Because, you know… screw the messenger. Let’s vote against our best interests anyway 🙄

I don’t agree with it, but there is an argument that people at least tried to protest and stop all of the horrible shit Trump was doing who then went back to not giving a shit while Biden continued a lot of those same horrible policies.

Prefacing this by saying I don't live in a swing state and my vote would be different if I did. Speaking as someone who does not plan to vote for Biden: I intend to vote for a candidate to the left of him, in the hopes that will push dems to the left or make a third party more viable.

there's a fundamental conception of voting as "personally and without reservation endorsing a given candidate" that I just don't understand. that's not what elections are! elections are a collective decision making process between (at least here in the US) only two possible outcomes!

It's self-importance. They think someone will care about their reasons enough to notice them.

I lived through 2000 and 2016 where some people couldn’t bring themselves to vote for an imperfect democrat. If a few thousand people had held their noses and voted for Gore and Hillary, the country is in a vastly different position.

In some ways it feels a lot like a manufactured effort to suppress the vote amongst groups most likely to oppose trump. Like a more sophisticated version of this

I mean id love to do something radical but I see no reason to advocate against voting it's just a waste of breath. I'll probably vote for biden or a third party just because why not can't necessarily hurt me

Unless you’re part of a revolutionary vanguard party or an underground militant cell, I really don’t know what your refusal to vote adds up to, other than a complete misreading of the point of politics: changing OUTCOMES, not purifying INTENTIONS
