Oh crap you just reminded me of what sore winners they were when Trump was in office. It will fuel their violence if he gets another round.

Went back to read some of Tom Scocca's in memorium about Steve Albini and rediscovered that repulsive and horrendous Apple iPad ad. Steve Albini's apology for contrarianism is still important. The ad is still repulsive and horrendous. And I'm still glad I get Scocca's essays in my email every day.

Alt text: To a huge degree, our system of government relies on norms. Our constitution is VERY brief. DJT showed how easy it was to topple norms. SCOTUS just declared that we're supposed to trust to "norms" to reign in presidents. If they are of good character, all will be fine. 1/2

I'm sorry you feel so uncomfortable being the only one in a mask. But I really want to encourage you to learn to accept such discomfort, because often in life you will have the chance to be the first to do what is right and it usually feels better than going along with what is wrong.

Yes, not disagreeing, and I hate the "a few bad apples" argument, but even among cops there are some exceptions who might find their courage under the right circumstances.

But it can't stop at November. Is the whole point. Winning an election won't dismantle the oppressive systems that have been in place all this time.
This is long haul work.

Jeeze. I have friends who are kink activists and if the conversation turns to something that makes me uncomfortable, they reply, "Oh, not your kink," and change the subject. Like, they respect my limits far far better than this.

Literally saw a TikTok awhile back where someone was interviewing tattoo artists, asking "What's the most stereotypical Millennial tattoo?", and two different artists answered "Harry Potter tat cover-up."

I agree with your reading that state and local governments may be able to protect the people in their jurisdictions. But Schedule F is on Trump's first-day list and, speaking of lists, the 2025 planners have already made one of civil servants to fire.

Of course, one of Trump's first plans is to get rid of civil service and replace it with political appointees.

Doesn't Timothy Snyder say one step to fighting tyranny as an individual is to find one institution to uphold? So you're fighting tyranny in your own small-furniture way.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

At this point, it is 100% undeniable that the Supreme Court majority is attempting to destroy democracy and seize total power over the US. They're not even trying to hide it.
Since the media refuses to clearly convey this fact to the public, tell everyone you know.

there's nothing wrong with having feelings of despair and futility, but i think it's most responsible to avoid airing all that out in public to the greatest extent possible right now.

OK, there are plenty of things within the official scope of defending the Constitution, for instance, that Biden could do now to help save things and you know goddamn well he'll take the stand that _using_ this power would be against his principles.

maybe seizing and arresting the Supreme Court majority for aiding and abetting an attempt to overthrow the U.S. government can be a "core constitutional duty" and an "official act," why not

I still have a Bondi Blue imac in the cellar. It is so heavy and awkward to carry that I haven't done anything with it. It's shaped the way you cut carrots when you want to test a diner's chopstick skills.
