TIL that Susannah Clarke did plan a sequel to Strange and Norrell* and that it was visiting the set of the BBC adaptation that made her feel she could write again, so indirectly brought about Piranesi. *Very much here for The Further Adventures of Childermass!

Show focused on African porters who, at the call of their colonial masters, hauled arms, cannons and supplies for European forces during WWI. WWI had 150,000 African casualties and over 1M African participants. Some were soldiers, some carried the guns, the cannons, even dismantled ships & tanks.

Often this is how "colored" I.S. troops and colonial subjects from Africa and colonies were used— to literally carry the machinery of war and provisions, often on their backs, on foot. Artist William Kentridge made an opera and film called The Head & the Load about Africans conscripted in WWI.
