I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.

To be honest, you don’t know, and I don’t know. I’m sure there will be polling on this in the coming weeks. Until then, we have our suppositions, and we disagree on how many people are hungry for a Harris candidacy versus how many are hungry for their imaginary ideal candidate who is not Biden.

Where we differ is that you are not factoring in her path to candidacy as part of the plausibility of her candidacy. She would be an extremely weak and vulnerable candidate because people will not have had a chance to choose her (or not). Significant headwinds for any candidate.

I also want a number of fantasy alternatives to our current nightmare. But Biden’s decisions over the past 12 months have set us on this path, and now there is little we can do but grit our teeth through it.

I hope you can see that you did not provide an affirmative political vision but rather an affirmation of democratic politics in general. That has produced mixed success to this point, and it’s a difficult argument to make when a Harris candidacy would necessarily bypass a democratic primary process.

I agree, with the caveat that Biden won in 2020 in large part because he didn’t need to run a campaign with an affirmative vision because he could just gesture at *everything* and say “I’m not Trump.” Harris would have to run either as Biden 2.0 or pull a Gore and try to run against her own ticket.

I agree with you there. The issue with being a minoritarian candidate is that a significant portion of the population will automatically view you as illegitimate unless proven otherwise. Not running or winning a primary and being installed as the candidate would compound that insurmountably.

I’m not saying that this is a reason not to support her—just that we should be serious about what we’re talking about here. Biden is being slammed for showing signs that *might* be age-related. Our political media coverage loves fixating on superficial questions identity instead of substance.

Auden wrote about increasing anxiety because we invented nukes and could literally destroy the world. There are indeed good reasons for people (including teens) to be experiencing increased anxiety—pandemics, genocides, political instability, climate crisis… Smartphones and social media don’t rate.

The concept of the unruly mob that threatens social order is a reactionary imagination of the nineteenth century after the French Revolution. The “mob” is short for “the Mobility,” the rootless masses who oppose “the Nobility.” The SC is just explicitly siding with aristocracy at this point.

There is also a prehistory to the trope that goes back to the 1920s and fears of technological change as dehumanizing and destructive of social relations, which is basically the anti-social-media argument, but 100 years ago.

I don’t have anything for your specific request, but it’s interesting to me that he is promoting a narrative that this generation is uniquely anxious, which has been a popular trope since W.H. Auden’s 1947 poem “The Age of Anxiety.”
