Something I wish the article really noted is it's not a cost issue:
"Texas paid more than $7.3 million in legal fees opposing air conditioning the geriatric unit of one state prison. After a 2018 settlement, the state agreed to cool the prison at a cost of less than $4 million."
That's right Texas paid way way more to fight a lawsuit than it would have in air conditioning. And it's not the only one! The point is to make people miserable. See also:
I remember reading a story about a prison going to court to fight giving a prisoner a different blanket (he was allergic to the standard one they normally had). Spent something like 30k to fight giving a guy a new 30 dollar blanket. Sheer evil.
Why bother trying to keep your people alive when you have the moral high ground of making them “melt in hell”. Though this is the same state that refuses to hook up utilities to any others because they must be on their own.
They don’t treat prisoners as human
Jeeze this is like Joe Arpaio’s tent city crap in Maricopa County that was shut down a number of years ago. The amount of money that man cost the state of Arizona just to be cruel was ridiculous.
Prisons absolutely must be climate controlled. But I'm curious about that $4 million number because cooling isn't a one-time cost. I'd guess that was just the AC install cost
Heh.
My home state of Idaho is legendary for stuff like this. Our AG essentially ran on defending lawsuits like this as a platform.
It's psychotic, but psychotic is popular here.
