As long as pro-Israel nationalism is a priority for many domestic Jewish orgs, they will be compromised in their fight against antisemitism. Defending nationalism often means allying with antisemites. Which can mean downplaying one form of antisemitism & amplifying another.

A festival in Virginia canceled a menorah lighting because they were concerned a Chanukah celebration would send the message that the festival was “supporting the killing/bombing of thousands of men, women, and children.” They offered to reinstate the celebration if a ceasefire banner was hung.

One thing that stinks about the rise of antisemitism is that today a report came out on a domestic topic of interest and I thought about reaching out to the authors to see if they could advise on a local issue. Then I saw they were former mutuals who celebrated Hamas on Oct 7. Now what do I do.

Oh, I know. I live in Alabama. People who see themselves as philosemitic have the same expectation and assumptions and I experience the results on the regular. (I do not see them as philosemitic but I only occasionally choose to explain that. It can wear you down.)

This is what gets left out of discussions about Israel, and when it gets left out, it exasperates Israelis. It's not that a tit-for-tat is the right response to these facts. It's that this terrible crime against Jews happened and is absent from the discourse. Yes, some emigration was voluntary.
