it'll probably need a table of addresses to use by sha256 of the binary and an update for each new version, but that's no big deal as long as they keep the basic design the same

hmm, the sophisticated way to do it is probably to spend some time with Ghidra and the Spotify binary, then build a tool that ptraces the right thing to grab the compressed audio frames before decoding so there's no recompression loss, and detect the track breaks and track metadata.

No, I don’t mean generally, I mean what, *exactly*, did he admit to, and what specific information from the podcast or elsewhere supports your understanding in those admissions?

I wish I had all four episodes transcribed; I only have the first. drive.google.com/file/d/1Ql2b...

Relatedly, the widespread use of the phrase "be normal" on this website needs to fuck off into an infinite vortex of flaming chainsaws

The bartender at my local pub is from Cork. His response to anyone ordering an Irish Car Bomb: "Can't make you that, but I can make a 9/11. It's just two kamikazes dropped in a Manhattan."

yikes, that is indeed an awful set of claims and I suspect this is suffering a lot from "original source is a damn podcast no one wants to sit through, summaries are distorting it"

Wait, is there a verifiable TERF connection for the specific reporter on this story? I knew the site had published Stella O'Malley and Debbie Hayton before, but couldn't verify the claims circulating that *management* is TERFy so downgraded that ground for skepticism.

I don't think describing ethical stances in terms agency-denying terms like 'infection' is particularly honest or likely to persuade anyone

Well, everyone. Since we've all had a hell of a few years, and things have shifted a bit in the last 24 hours - I think we deserve a treat. Time for the kitten seen from underneath photo? Oh, I think so. We've all been very good. We deserve it.

This is super important work. And it looks like it's actually having an effect. Normal people learn about Project 2025 and are scared as shitless as they should be. The Nation, The New Republic, Rolling Stone, Boston Review and others are doing the work that NYT and WaPo are neglecting.

pedantic is good when assessing claims that got the internet in an uproar and caused a bunch of rumors to circulate and fog of war; I'll sure never forget the experience of a 'legitimate journalist' running moles against my locked account and publishing edited screencaps

Yeah. Unfortunately, with the TERF connection of Tortoise having to be demoted from "managed by" to "published them" I'm coming down on "yeah, probably the awful tip of the iceberg" and feeling rather "god damn it I loved _Sandman_ when I was 17; now I know how Harry Potter fans feel" about it all

yeah, that's the big issue: actual sex pests are good at finding the most vulnerable people to bother. I hadn't heard about China Mieville before this, actually, so I guess I don't know if it's that level of bad, but that's the systemic problem with warning people that way:

Also, to amend previous statements, while Tortoise Media has published Stella O'Malley a bunch (along with Debbie Hayton), the specific claim that's been circulating here and I repeated earlier that she's involved in its management doesn't seem to be accurate

Yeah, I just got tipped off yesterday by someone I consider reliable that they attended a wedding at which he was a guest and were warned about him. I'm hedging because that's still indirect and isn't someone directly claiming to be a victim or witness, but it's definitely an independent data point.

I don't think rounding off "run by one of the founders of Genspect" to "news source confirmed to be transphobic" is an accurate representation of the level of potential reliability problems here, although as I stated, I lean toward "probably true" on the basis of independent evidence a whisper ...

The incapacity to deal with epistemic ambiguity on display in certain quarters of this web site today is *spectacular* (while one should never regard TERFs as reliable sources, someone I trust did tip me off that a whisper network about Neil Gaiman existed independently, albeit with few details)
