As usual Asian people have been left out of the discussion about masks and hate. Asian people have been attacked throughout the pandemic for wearing a mask. A mask ban would further stigmatize mask wearing and encourage further harassment and violence against mask wearers.
I know Asian people have been extremely smart about wearing masks in flu season, and also for allergies. I wish the world would catch on to this practice. I have, being immune compromised for years. Wake up people, it’s for your own health!
My state just passed a law ostensibly to "stop protestors" from masking, but it's really just to curb masking in general. It's in part directed at Asians, I have no doubt.
Me? I'm an immunocompromised Muscogee trans woman. I'm gonna continue to mask, and protest as I'm able. Fuck the police.
When I first learned about COVID, before it was obvious to me how dangerous it is, my most immediate concern was sinophobia. I genuinely don't understand how people seem to be so oblivious about it.
I started masking in the last week of January 2020. I was not the only one, as I lived in one of the most heavily Asian neighborhoods in Portland at the time. But it was almost two months before I saw another white person wearing one.
