4+ years into COVID and many still missing the nuances:
Often 6ft isn't enough, but increasing physical distance reduces risk
N95 are much better, but surgical masks do help
Outdoors is safer, but you can still catch it
Vaccines reduce transmission, but don't eliminate it
Still yeeted from the baggy mask physio today when she shared that she has a 'head cold'!
I don't trust my mask or hers for 30m of close proximity and no ventilation.
Anecdotally, If you're vaxxed and boosted, still contracted, it's more like the flu. AND I believe I have more antibodies and nearly immune. I KNOW..... it mutates, however the basic underlying antibodies still can do the job. What say you Doc?
Most people don’t even know what a surgical mask is. They are just a spit guard. N-95 is just barely enough to stop SARS /cov 2. And it’s a fairly large microbe. N1H5 is smaller*
I’m a microbiologist, Coronaviridae is the family that SARS-Cov 2 is in. Which contains thousands of (living) virus species. Saying “Covid” is like saying you eat a toxic mushroom, so that group of millions of species is toxic. Let’s start giving most humans the benefit of doubt.
I think the biggest problem I have is that people stopped washing their fucking hands again and I can't even explain how much that pisses me right the fuck off
The nuances behind how viruses transmit and how humans behave are exactly why we need layered public health measures.
In such a complex environment, no one single public health tool is perfect. The best community protection happens when we use multiple tools together.
6 ft was never enough. 15 ft is probably also not enough. 6ft from center of body to center of body (lines at the cashier being 6 ft apart) is absolutely not enough. Some people might have 2 dimensional thinking but they are also thicker than a sheet of paper.
Yes, many nuances Dr. Tran! Can you briefly explain how surgical masks help? I can maybe see how if someone w/ Covid wearing a surgical mask is at other end of the room from me, it will slow down the aerosols traveling to me & I might not get Covid in 20min…but the unmasked person next to them will😬
Are you suggesting everyone should still be doing these things as they go about their public lives? I feel like vaccines, antivirals, and testing+isolation are the best weapons for most people for the present day, with masks as a good option for people who want or need more protection.
