Jonathan Glazer basically said, we're Jews who made a movie about the Holocaust, and Jews who use their Jewish identity or invoke the Holocaust to justify what's happening in Gaza do not speak for us. And he continues to be demonized and vilified for it. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...
To those who are saying, "Well, Glazer should have said it more clearly": This condemnation isn't coming from the people who believe the lie that Glazer repudiated his Jewishness. These people understand exactly what he said and are furious that he said it.
That is NOT what he said.
Glazer spoke about dehumanization the occupation causes both sides to engage in about the other & where dehumanization can lead—to mass killings, like what Hamas did on Oct 7 & what the IDF may be doing in Gaza in response. Dehumanization is a key component of genocide.
Yeah I agree like yes the Holocaust, Hebron, and Tiberias was horrible but do not appropriate the tragedies of your forefathers to justify this slaughter.
Obscure his words, attack him personally, word policing, deliberately try to change the public memory of what tens of millions saw and heard themselves... anything other than engaging with what he actually said.
The way this makes me feel in my gut as a jew. Like my stomach has fists. Fuck your refusal to recognize my assertion of humanity. It's the lowest of the low.
I'm just appreciative that our story took specific pains to emphasize the difference between the way his quote has been truncated and the actual quote. There endeth my commentary for these purposes.
Unfortunately we now live in a world where the majority of the general public appear to lack the ability or education to recognize nuance. Simple words for simple people is the mode under which information now needs to be disseminated.
The amazing thing here is that Schaecter says he watched Glazer give the speech, yet instead of responding to what Glazer actually says, he just makes up his own things and responds to those as if Glazer had said them.
It's odd that the only group that the Hollywood Reporter could find to stir this pot is a charity that is only 5 years old. And based in Florida. And allied with Republican FL senators Rubio and Scott. Just saying they really reached for this controversy.
