It's depressing as hell, but a whole lot of "why are these people voting against their interests?" questions are easily resolved by recognizing their "interests" include—at the very top, the highest priority—racism.
Unfortunately, that's true. Bigotry -- pardon the pun -- trumps principle and philosophy on the New Right. And maybe a lot more on the Old Right than they'd care to admit.
Not that there was all that much of those two things anyway, but there it is.
One of the biggest failings of our current era is for many people—in news media and on the left—to understand that many on the right actually do have sincerely held ideological beliefs and that its not just also materialist motivations
Whites living in rural areas are more likely to be wealthier than minorities in rural areas. This is why they need to filter for income. Their interests are not just racist but classist. What is considered ‘rural’ are exurbs of urban areas populated by the white flight upper-middle class.
They constitute a ‘win’ as a loss for others. They can’t imagine everyone winning and thriving together. Someone has to lose even if it means they lose, too.
I'm a country bird and it's so fucking depressing how much racism there is in the country.
Especially when it's being proposed as a way to abolish the systems that fuck over rural areas (It won't)
Yeah but from a "what should be done perspective" I think a focus on how economic elites benefit from it and actively perpetuate it is actually important, e.g., we can actually do stuff to stop racist hiring practices.
Takes about 20 seconds to figure that if you are on the same side as a bunch of guys chanting "blood and soil" and carrying torches, you might have somewhat outdated racial thoughts.
