I'm surprised by how many people don't think about this... Most people think their responsibility/power ends at their consumption.

This. Also, get involved in the climate movement somehow, using your unique talents and passions. And don’t strive for perfection in any of it. Just help push things in a better direction. Human systems, after all, are made up of individuals.

This is yet another demonstration of the power and success of climate science. Successful predictions like this demonstrate that we understand something fundamental about the climate system. In fact, climate science is a parade of successful predictions.

It's not looking good. But I keep hoping (and working so) that Canadians will wake up and make Canada into a Democratic country.

Erm... I get this feeling sometimes! As I try to pull folks off the sidelines, I'm often surprised at how many (otherwise smart people) think we'll be ok... I also get the feeling that the closer I get to this issue to harder it looks and the more I see a core of failure... U get that part too?

Heroic statement. How come so many are content on the sidelines even when they seem to kinda get it? Have u managed to inspire anyone off their sideline? Are they even at the field sometimes...

Being really dogged in this is the best way to get things done. Because let me tell you: they do not care how many experts tell them their ideas are bad and possibly unconstitutional. They need to fear their constituents.

Umm am I looking at a flood ready house that is now in a drought? Is this the poster child for climate adaptation? As in, how terrible that we must adapt to such a horrendous range of opposite impacts.

And as we learned in bc this winter, you can get the worst of both worlds by swinging from super warm winter to super cold - with devastating results for food production. Plus pine beetle... We need cold. Plus. Don't run your heating experiment on my climate even if u think it'll be good! (Ffs)

It is probably many things that make politicos sound insane -- for my money on the top cause: they're talking about something that is insane. A criminal unabashed fascist anti-thinker VS old dude? In the most consequential country/election that will (likely) ever exist on the planet...

Yes and, I just learned that 0.2-1.3C of warming is masked by air pollution so we must must must reduce non-co2 emissions also at the same time because that will drop the temperature fastest and approximately to the same degree as the masking effect. (pls translate to Heyhoe-style comms) :)

I thought that land can only really take up land-emissions. Not enough trees to take up ancient carbon, right? And what of the idea that the ocean gives back some of the carbon that it had absorbed, as the atmospheric concentrations decline - is this factored in the rate and ratios described here?

We’ve long talked about the carbon budget, but given that the world is on track to pass the 1.5C target in the coming decade its time to start talking about the "carbon debt".

Right. But arent the aerosols short lived and the co2 they come with is long-lived? So ending them together still gets us to 1.5-2.5, no? That cooling mask (and how few know about it) is gobsmackingly bananas. Unless, as u say, we get methane down along with other ghgs. (love that plan)

Thx much appreciated. Sorry but I must say I'm still a bit confused... If all the aerosols precipitated and all else stayed the same... Wouldn't we be looking at 1.9-2.5 (based on your numbers here)? I like that we can stop methane to balance the aerosol masking! I will carry that with me. :)

Sooo... In other words, we've caused 1.9-2.5C of warming, we're just masking the fact? People still talk about keeping warming below 1.5 or 2... They're royally confused/behind on the science? FA/FO? Thx for your work. I'm sorry. :(

What is a thing that seems positive but is actually negative in the whole? . (And it could flip back at some point) Examples: Recycling (making people feel better about consumption without alleviating much harm) Some eco 'conservation' activities (Band-Aid without diagnosis).

Could they just insure themselves and put it on the bill? Then customers would be enraged and could demand that big polluters pay... And we could stop the madness.

Egad. So much work to get laws... The expression I've heard that fits this is: Culture eats policy for breakfast. Also, there must be cases where the project wasn't approved...

This is a dangerous statement. A trump win just changes the game but doesn't mean game over. Biden has been stepping up but it's not fast enough. He hasn't challenged the power structure that wants to profit from the destruction of earth. Maybe that power laid bare would reveal our challenge.

The hope for many of us is that the tradeoff has been less wild fish because of the farmed fish. And that may reverse. This kind of aquaculture seems to be net-negative ocean food. We've already seen some salmon populations bounce back in the region.

We've got a airstrip in our sleepy town, its now being upgraded to serve wealthy folks' planes. We're gonna stop it. And then stop all luxury emissions. We've got to.

Rather than fossil fuel companies, I've been considering whether it's a slightly broader group of wealthy folks also denying and promoting the luxurious/dirty lifestyle. They've probably funded less direct denial/disinfo, but they have funded the 'American delusion' (tm).

I saw an academic chart recently that indicated greed or gouging was a very small percentage of the increase in food prices. I don't disagree that greed is bad, but it's not much of this particular problem... Food costs more, it's been articificially cheap. I don't think it'll be cheap again.

Nice. Sweet policy. One other issue on this front... Apparently the HVAC companies have 2x heat pump install prices over the past decade. I haven't dug into it, but it appears the rebate money we get here has been gobbled up by 'alleged' gouging. U familiar with this?

Woah. Not sure where the problem is here. For those who can afford it, it makes sense. For those who can't, we need other options. Including climate finance and entrepreneurs who cover the upfront costs. And we need equity to tackle climate. And some folks with 0 cash have 'chosen' to overextend.

Ok thx. I'll give it some thought. I haven't read the article yet, but I just want to offer the possibility that current population levels require food systems that are not traditional to many places... And are incompatible with local culture... Which is kinda racist.
