Hurricane Beryl is likely going to make landfall in Texas in a few days. Corpus Christi to Galveston...Pay attention as tracks have been trending eastward (and may continue so) and possible intensification over the Gulf of Mexico. Plenty of warm water and favorable shear.... The future is here

Not your point, and not as extreme as it seems SF-inland temp disparity is like, but the coastal temp thing in DC always surprises me. Like “97 degrees in the city with stagnant muggy humid air and feels like 103; Ocean City 100 miles east is 77 degrees and windy with ocean temp of 65”

I like Bluesky but something I'm realizing is there's a shortage of funny people. @kashana.bsky.social is doing too much labor. We need more funny people

The biomass-to-fuel numbers all look alike. (See a couple examples below)

Re-upping this excellent article by WRI colleagues on increasing competition for crops—not only to feed people directly but also to feed animals and cars (biofuels). Did you know that since the 1960s, the share of global cropland used for domestic food consumption has declined from ~50% to 37%? 🧪

Burn more biomass -> use more land -> if wood, cut down more trees & release new CO2 that takes decades to “pay back”/if crops diverted from food supply, cut down more trees & release new CO2 to replace forgone food Yes use less fossil fuels, but if new biogenic CO2 more than offsets CO2 savings, 😬

PSA: The atmosphere experiences biogenic CO2 emissions as...CO2 emissions Burning wood releases a big CO2 pulse to the atmosphere; it can take decades or over a century for the carbon debt to be paid back if/when trees grow back Meanwhile we need to drastically cut CO2 emissions in the short term

How crops are used also varies by region. In high-income countries, yields are high but many crops are used for non-food uses. In low-income countries, more cropland feeds people directly, but yields are low. This creates risks for both food security & agricultural expansion into natural ecosystems.

And yes, there are other land competition threats such as biomass for CO2 removal (e.g., land-based carbon offsets esp. if done as "land grabs" in low-income countries), ecosystem restoration if not done carefully, timber demand growth, and infrastructure/built environment expansion. See e.g.:

Not sure what you mean? End of article notes that both supply- and demand-side measures will be necessary to sustainably feed a growing world population.

Food crop yields are not keeping up with yields for non-food crops. Click the link to the article www.wri.org/insights/cro... to see how yields for direct food crops, feed crops, industrial-use (e.g., biofuel) crops have changed between 1964-2013. 🧪

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

Why stick with a bald eagle when you can go with a patriotic marbled shrimp? Check out the stars and stripes on that tail! These shrimp have a wild variety of color and patterns, this one was pretty unique. Off Ulua beach a few years ago. (Saron marmoratus) 📷🌿🐙

Thoughtful thread. It sometimes feels like people have lost the ability to listen to or even acknowledge each other. Feelings are complex and what motivates one person to act (or even just hang on and not give up) can be demotivating for another. There’s no magic setting on the hope/fear dial.
