I've been thinking about this recently. As a trans person with dual citizenship, the political climate is motivating me to get my paperwork together to be able to leave if worst comes to worst. Reminds me of my parents scrambling to get their US citizenships after Bush was elected... Ironic reversal

Sometime close to me was very sick with covid at the same time I was, Feb ‘23. Their doctors urged them back to work, saying the fatigue was all in their head. Now they are wheelchair- and home-bound. My partner knew the lit, insisted I rest for *2-3 months* — I’m now fully recovered.

This isn't quite right. There are a few hypotheses for the origins of "Istanbul", one of which is that emerged from the Greek phrase "in/to The City" which sounds somewhat similar — but it's not just "The City" in Greek, and there are other credible hypotheses for the name's origins too

So far, most attention has been paid to the risk of LLMs producing harmful or dangerous content. But our work suggests we should be attuned to another risk: that of censorship. In a world of LLM-generated cultural content, we should be asking: what stories won’t be told? (7/8)

In the course of our study, we were also able to empirically determine what genres of TV shows were most likely to flag (crime, drama, horror, and sci-fi), what flags were most likely to be raised (violence), and estimates of GPT’s numerical cutoffs for raising a flag. (6/8)

In addition to real scripts, we had GPT-3.5 & -4 generate scripts based on synopses from IMDb and Wikipedia. Compared to real scripts, these were less likely to flag, suggesting GPT is self-censoring, producing content that lacks many key themes of the actual TV episodes. (5/8)

We tested real scripts and found that GPT flagged ~70% of them as violating content. OpenAI requires users to be 13+ to use the site - certainly TV-PG shows should be appropriate! But even just looking at shows rated TV-PG, many PG-rated real scripts were flagged too. (4/8)

In our study, led by Yaaseen Mahomed with collaborators Sorelle Friedler, Charlie Crawford, Santana Gautam, we built a pipeline and curated a data set to audit ChatGPT’s content moderation on synopses and real scripts from the top 100 U.S. TV shows (3/8)

ChatGPT isn’t just an LLM; it also has content moderation filters to keep users from seeing or generating hate speech, violent content, and other disturbing results. But as it turns out, popular TV shows often contain some violence, sex, and other too-colorful content. (2/8)

Why am I debugging in a workflow that involves making changes in my single-column LaTeX while trying to mentally anticipate what will happen when TAPS transforms it into two-column, and then waiting 10-25 minutes to see the results?? Just give me a two-column template and skip all this madness!!
