My masters is in history & the comparison has always been accurate to me. My dissertation was on the Spanish Civil War (ironically Hemingway’s niece is now one of my BFFs) & how Franco got Hitler to try bomb the Basques back to Stone Age. Hitler’s attitude to that is an interesting comparison too

On the one hand, the US has a fairly well-developed history of entirely home-grown fascists, so comparisons to Hitler aren't necessary. But on the other hand, most people understand that "this sounds like Hitler" is a *bad* thing, so as long as it works, who am I to complain?

I've been pointing out for years that the original version of Godwin's Law, as stated by the Godwin in whose virtual presence I stand, says nothing about Hitler comparisons meaning that you lose the argument. That got added in later and it's a crappy idea because guess what: Sometimes you should.
