This is actually a point I really want to make to the “posting is not activism” idea- I’ve been talking about Palestine a long time and I’ve never seen this kind of popular support around it- and a big reason why is literally posting
As harrowing as the news has been, people constantly talking about it has made a huge difference. A lot of us don't know shit and hearing from people who do is incredibly helpful
A lot of the people I've seen sneering at the idea of posting/engaging on social media as useful in some way, are legacy media types super keen to insist that only they can be the purveyors of useful words thank you very much. Which is demonstrably untrue based on their own personal records.
It makes a huge difference to talk about it- I learned about Palestine a LOT through online work- but when I talk about it in different spaces I know I might be the first person someone knows who talks about it
I continue to post about casualty numbers and make donations; there is little else I can do. I don't feel like it makes a difference but to do nothing is not an option.
Five years ago I wrote a Twitter thread about a young Saudi couple I’d gotten to know a bit. It helped keep Saudi human rights (and Loujain) in the public conversation and elicited support from Congress.
Posting doesn’t magically fix everything but it can, sometimes, supplement activism.
I've spent decades being the person who speaks the unwelcome truth (large to small) & makes/holds space for others to join me & I have absolutely seen that. We have been told it's not our right to speak on this our whole lives & to see others reject that & know we can speak together is powerful.
