They are very sassy & bold birds. Which curiously makes them all the more lovable, I think.

In all seriousness people need to take that we are already in a coup and it’s accelerating. The courts are fractured. The republicans have fully retreated from rule of law and shared society and the democrats are asleep or worse at the wheel. Really don’t know how to say it any clearer

I don’t in theory disagree with the decision not to pay the ransom. But also the umpteenth times more now required to rebuild is not something many places can afford

I wish I’d seen that show too. What did you think of the Cooper Hewitt show on Es Devlin? Her studies of the natural world were particularly mind-blowing for me.

I saw the Liebes exhibition last month & loved the mix of colors & demonstrations of how her workshop incorporated new synthetic fibers. An excellent show highlighting the contributions of women to the mid century modern interior design aesthetic.

If you don't have time/inclination to read this article, at least take time to listen to the audio file (embedded in this article) documenting what may have been the last time anyone heard the song of the Hawaiian Kauaʻi ʻōʻō bird in 1984. Hauntingly beautiful.

So all these museums raise ticket prices, but then cut staff when admission drops. If only there was a solution to that. (Cough cough, board members, cough cough.)

I think one of the main reasons why I haven't abandoned my Twitter/X account entirely yet is because I keep going back there for Flaco and Central Park birding updates. I wish more of those accounts posted here.

I remember our Special Collections staff arguing so hard to keep getting printed catalog cards & we tech services folks reassured them that the cloud storage would be fine, backed up by yearly CD-Rom copies (not made I think). I hope we didn’t make a huge mistake.

I was a rare materials cataloger at a US museum complex and delighted in creating detailed records for the collections. It's horrifying to think all those years of work could be basically inaccessible because of some ransomware attack.

I just checked the British Library website a couple of days ago for a status update and assumed that the sites had been restored. Sadly, as you note, that's not the case and it looks like this terrible situation will be ongoing for way too long.

Poor squirrel probably thought the tree would be a good warm place to spend the winter. If the tree seemed rotted out (I don't know; why else would the city remove it?), it would have been good to leave part of it still standing for birds & squirrels.

You'd think the metaverse JUST collapsing into flames less than a year ago after comparable hype and investment would induce like 2% skepticism over a technology that's rapidly wrecking entire industries without any evidence that it can improve them OR make them more profitable. But no.

The Texas school textbook market is huge & influential with publishers and so the content decisions that Texas makes affects what gets taught in other states’ schools as well, unfortunately.

Exactly and that’s why the current digital environment is working so well to favor the authoritarian because of the information overload and novelty exhaustion we all experience, that is only growing. We need more librarians and we need more physical information and we need it to be free to anyone

Yes, access to libraries and library workers is essential for a well-informed & functioning community. That's why the news that the public libraries in New York City will be closed on weekends is so discouraging. Funding for libraries is precarious in many places, even in prosperous ones.

It scares me as much as any of the politics that we are seeing, and the rise in the authoritarianism, because ultimately authoritarians look at knowledge as a threat, and the more we digitize the more we lose of ourselves and our understanding of each other, and fact, especially when it disappears

Yes, authoritarians know that whoever controls knowledge has the big advantage. So they not only want to remove reliable information but also to create false information and widely share it.

The bigger conversation here that I hope starts to bubble into peoples conscious is the fact that the entire knowledge base that we have, and will have going forward is digital, and can disappear in the blink of an eye at the whims of any person who deems it fit, we need to protect the knowledge.
