However, I frequently found that the writing advice I received either didn't work for me or actually hurt my writing. For years I blamed myself. I thought it was because of my own failings that advice such as "sit your butt in the chair and write a 1000 words a day" never worked. 4/

But the biggest tip is there's no single path to creation. Just as the paths we take through life continually change, so can how we create our writings and art. What worked one day may not work another. Don't let anyone ever tell you there's only a single way to be creative. 8/8

Someone once told me that by charging pennies for decent quality art, I'm letting my customers expect that other artists with similar quality should also charge pennies, and it helped me a bit to stop undervaluing myself.

THE REFORMATORY has been my most extraordinary publishing journey: it was named a New York Times Notable Book, it won an L.A. Times Book Prize, and it also just won the 2024 Chautauqua Prize. I came so close to walking away from it. Research in Marianna and reading memoirs was so painful.

Noticed my Uber driver's name was Xun, asked her how to pronounce it. She said "Shwee." So pretty! We bonded over each having a name that lots of people struggle to pronounce.
