Yeah, but nothing bad ever came out of the British East India Company dealing with China, right?

It was regulatory screwing rather than a law, but the Committee on Foreign Investment forced Max Polyakov to sell Firefly Aerospace two years ago.

This goes without saying for all embargoes. It’s just interesting that they said it. I’ll bet it’s because Congress loves their TikTok. Do you think they watch French Rich Kid?

Yuuuuup. It’s also weird to me to see Americans generally not discuss this fact in any of their discourse on the subject. It’s all debates about TikTok safety, what China is or isn’t doing, censorship… which are valid convos but… the concept of the US just forcing this is fucked on so many levels

I’m not sure how it isn’t unconstitutional as a bill of attainder

In other countries, forced partnerships and transfers of technology have been around since the 1980s that I know of. It's not new. It's just way more visible when it's a public media company that millions of people are using and it's the US saying they need a US partner in the US.

I mean, the US is just an spin-off from the British East India Company, they even kept the flag and everything.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and in some cases happily sprouts a sapling right at the roots.

I'm curious to see if it holds up in court. I don't have much hope it gets struck down, but I would love to be wrong. I don't like TikTok, or ByteDance, but this could have ramifications for other industries as well. The largest VC company in gaming is Chinese-owned.
