I'm obviously not here to defend the NYT, but this notion that no one in the US knows what to think until the New York Times tells them is just so Bluesky-pilled. I had friends and family who couldn't care less about the NYT texting me during & after the debate like "gah what's wrong with Biden??"

The NYTimes has been drumming this drum for two years to the point of malpractice. Biden had a bad debate, in June, which you move on from. But, Biden’s advisors so far seem really bad at their job (see: debate and lack of fallout triage), AND the NYTimes has doubled down on wall to wall coverage.

In America, we don’t listen to words, we respond to bullying and bravado. Which is why Biden’s low energy performance seemed scary.

I don't think that's the issue. The issue is that SCOTUS ending American democracy is, like, 100x more important than Biden's mental acuity, but NYT has spilled 100x more ink on the latter.

Totally agree. Biden post-debate is a very big, fast-moving story, most of whose protagonists are trying to hide what they’re thinking and doing behind the scenes, and covering stories like that is what the NYT is for.

"Biden is too old" was already a pop culture meme, the debate just offered a stark demonstration that a lot of normal liberal viewers were completely unprepared for. Say what you like about Sulzberger and co. but the freakout was mostly organic!

To be clear OP is not espousing that view, just characterizing it, so please don't @ him. And I know it's a bit of a straw man and yes OF COURSE the media plays a role in shaping consensus and driving narratives but it just is not this one-way street that too many self-styled media critics imagine

I don’t think they’re creating it. It’s a big story. They’re just breathlessly supporting it and giving oddly low coverage to stuff like SCOTUS’ Monday ruling.

The debate was very bad. I suspect it was most surprising to those who aren't heavy media consumers and were less aware of the Biden age discourse. I've had Dems tell me it made them feel horrible and they literally couldn't watch the whole thing.

It's not only the NYT. It's every single media outlet totally harping on the EXACTLY same irrelevant issue they did with Hillary, for a week now. While completely ignoring Trump's crimes, hard data and new revelations being leaked by– guess whom?
