Like Merritt mentioned the bud lite girl — the only time I’ve gotten really worked up in the OR was when the nurse I work with, who is generally a lovely person, bought into the bud lite culture wars bullshit because that’s what she’s exposed to. I don’t yell in the OR but I went off on her for that

I almost did a facial plastics residency so I could be that surgeon, it’s such an important way to deeply change someone’s life for the better but now it’s a political cudgel for the worst people in the world, and so many hapless souls just float along. It’s painful to watch

Right nobody said this to me in 2018! Like it wasn’t considered a political topic really in any way, and I even framed it based on what my trans friends felt was important for doctors to know, which is sort of more of a social topic than dispassionate medical knowledge, and STILL nobody said it!

Even as recently as 2018 in ENT residency, I gave a lecture to my department about transgender medicine and the response was largely “huh, interesting, I didn’t know any of that!” I literally could not give such a lecture today.
