Newbern, Alabama – a small town an hour away from Selma – will hold its first legitimate elections in over 60 years after a four-year legal battle
The proposed settlement will also reinstate Patrick Braxton, who sued white leadership, as the mayor
Wow, shocked to be hearing about this town again. I thought like so many horrid things that happen it would just be swept away with no resolution.
Glad Mayor Braxton will be able to take his seat.
Good! I hope those a**holes are also fined and forced to pay him the exact amount of money he’s paid out of pocket to support his constituents, plus reasonable interest. Plus more, for their malicious intent.
Have been following this story for a while, so glad to see this update. What the white town council did here was an egregious violation of voting rights. A town that is 80% Black to never have elected a Black mayor is unbelievable if there weren’t illegal shenanigans involved.
He used his own money to help folks during the pandemic b/c he couldn't access town funds. I'm going to guess the appointed mayor didn't do a damned thing.
