Reminder that meritocracy was invented (by Toby Young’s dad of all people) as a satirical idea for a dystopian book back in the 1950s, and shouldn’t be used as an actual way of justifying calcified privilege and inequality.

As I age, her I find myself thinking about her more and more her wisdom, humanity and integrity were inspiring her bravery to remain true to kindness and compassion in light of the craziness frankly amazes me upon reflection. As a 20 year old I was oblivious, today I appreciate the leadership.

I was a young naive junior nurse on ward 9c at Auckland Hospital for a year in 1986. Where many young men came home from various countries to die. With or without their families (it was still illegal to be gay). It was a deep sentinel experience and I now understand it was transformative.

During COVID there was a mismatch of ethnic vaccination data because a significant proportion of Maori didn't identify as Maori when they fronted to medical and health services because they believed that they would get substandard treatment or misdiagnosed. But you do you Nicola.

We had a protest yesterday against cuts to disability services. It was functionally erased in media coverage: most people won't know it even happened. Today is harder to ignore, but some platforms are trying anyway while others are minimising it.

Cool - so for $20 a week all I needed to do was fire 5,000 public servants, get rid of free prescriptions and subsidised public transport, disestablish the Māori Health Authority, and borrow a couple of billion dollars a year more. Alternatively for $20 a week I could have had all of those things.
