"We can’t trust the job to feckless college presidents who are willing to watch their students get slammed to the ground to save their jobs. Will somebody please call the philosophy department?" Must read @willbunch.bsky.social column. www.inquirer.com/opinion/comm...
I think Republicans have learned that threatening and intimidating college administrators works pretty well.
See DEI, Affirmative Action, and plagiarism examples.
this bashes trans students or “the safe-spaces crowd” for…needing special extra rules in order to be safe from physical assault by the cis people the article is supposedly questioning the abuses of.
And as predicted, the Republican House Leader is using the refusal to act as an excuse to put the Republicans into the running of colleges per story today
Sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war
Losing your job when Congress, wealthy donors and influential alumni are all against the protests does the university no good if the next president is worse for the university
I’m not saying it’s right, just that sometimes there is no good option
Forty years of fecklessness. Forty years of trickle down economics. Of endless fundraising, of Vanguard portfolios trumping scholarship. Real estate rather than tenure evaluations. The values ain’t corroded - they gone
university administrators are basically hired to be hedge fund managers for the endowment, with the actual accedemic parts of the university as a sort of annoying add-on that they have to deal with in their spare time
Biden is going to lose the election because of this. It's going to split the left at the crucial time they need to defeat Trump. How predictable.
We are letting our governments fealty to the Israeli Zionists flush every American's future down the toilet.
Great article, but having seen America's muted reaction to the horrific violence committed by cops during the BLM protests, it's quite clear the majority welcomes the jackboot of authority. I have no hope that folk will stand for free-speech, they only stand for the speech they agree with.
“But the students posted on Instagram that they were going to occupy campus and also they had the same tents and there’s a rule against encampments and we can’t have rule breakers. But also they are innocent kids being used as pawns by adults with bad motives.” Etc.
Wasn't it just a few months ago that we were being told that we could rely on the police to refuse illegal/immoral/unjust orders to round up people for deportation in response to our outrage at trump's/Project 2025's proposed policies? They're softening the ground.
They can't. They're cutting the philosophy department. And sociology, education, psychology, the humanities writ large.... Perhaps you'd like to talk to a junior faculty in computer science or business? Oh no, not those ones interested in social solutions...
