I heard from a friend — who I think called me on the phone to tell me? — that my local comics, RPG, and used book shop happened to have a VHS copy of Akira on the shelf, and I immediately rushed downtown to buy it. That’s just how the sneakernet of uncommon cultural goods worked.

“I had to go back just one more time. Everything I needed was sitting ready in my home office, down to an emergency pair of underwear and a couple of hydration packs. So at two thirty in the morning, I patted the dog, grabbed my pack, and headed for Arches National Park.”
My latest for SIERRA.

Years ago my wife met a cat — Named Frijole Negro — wearing a tiny cowboy hat, eating from a turquoise spoon at a New Mexico rest stop. “Doesn’t she hate that hat?” She asked. And the cat’s owner laughed and said “Honey, she ain’t ever known no different.” So you should get that cat sombrero.

I don’t mind the language itself, but I don’t like _using_ Python at all, not one bit. Managing environments is so goddamn fiddly and wasteful, it’s this stressful friction that I really resent.

Another vote for the functions chapter in R4DS here. If you get to the point where you want to share functions (eg internally, the way you’d share a SAS macro), the R Packages book is a great next step.

As someone who still has a strong streak of Dream-of-the-90s Web in their bones it's a bit demoralizing to find the AI Search-Summarize-Slop Loop seriously confronting me with the question of why I, or anyone, should ever again write anything of substance that's just freely available online.

In general I find grown men in the tech industry to be especially susceptible to peer pressure. I don't know what it is about that culture - but if the other tech bros are reading it, listening to it, or doing it, they also really want to also.
