But it is an incredibly useful fiction that can be deployed, with accompanying cherry-picked metrics, when justifying hiring your brother-in-law's brother-in-law or your sorority sister as "the most qualified candidate."

constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay...

They would just get carved out and admitted as new states, no secession necessary. The "parent" state would need to consent. (The way this consent was secured for WV is very interesting, as it involved a second government of Virginia.)

BREAKING -- New York Public Library for the win! After a massive public backlash, NYC's libraries are getting their funding back -- and will be open on Sundays again. Take a bow, folks -- WE did this.

For writers, I think there’s some value in thinking of genre as *the works by other writers that you’re writing in response to,* and for readers, genre might help you find other works you like. But I kinda don’t subscribe to most attempts to define genre.

The "a lot of shark attacks lately -- do you notice that?" part makes me ask -- does he think the President can control the frequency of shark attacks?

Anytime the Trump GOP refers to "a Rubicon-crossing moment", it is worth remembering that Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his legions b/c he was afraid that if he tried to run for reelection without his troops he would be arrested and put on trial for electoral corruption & genocide.

The NPV compact requires a majority of the Electoral College, in effect; and it's vulnerable to changes in the state legislatures that approve it.

My concern is that all this rhetoric is to lay the grounds for future action. "We had to stop them before they stopped us" justification.

Just learned of the death of David Konstan. A major loss. He was both a towering figure in the field and a very warm and generous person. He showed me a signal kindness at a moment of high vulnerability, which I will never forget.

That's 12 hours, 33 minutes, and 36 seconds for us non-metric users. (This is so transparently "we expect 40 hours of work, but can only pay for 12.")

The best April Fool's prank I ever participated in involved helping my mother change all the clocks back two hours in her boyfriend's house on the day that April Fools' Day and DST coincided. (Why two hours? So he'd assume that he changed his watch in the wrong direction.)
