Didn't even try the "Go into debt, build up your navy, and trap the Ottomans on the Asian side of the strait" strategy SMDH.

Same, plus Twitter leftists going "Trump won't implement Project 2025, also the Democrats support it anyway."

MAXXXINE: Well, this made me fucking holler. Pure pleasure, cinema of sensation *and* ideas. There’s a vicious, trenchant critique of American Puritanism in here, as well as a treatise on ambition and low art. But don’t worry, it’s all wrapped in a gleaming, ballistically fucked up Hollywood Giallo.

In seriousness one of the things giving me hope is Trump's supporters are inclined to think the Deep State rigs all elections anyway and that a guy who's running for president just to get out of his legal problems and save his business is a true believer like them.

Could that also have something to do with the really bizarre fact that Democratic candidates in state races now and in 2022 are/were polling much better than Biden?

One of the things I have to keep reminding myself of is that the people claiming that non-response bias isn't that much of a problem anymore are the people whose careers depend on non-response bias not being seen as a problem.

I guess I'm just glad in a sick way that so many people, from nobodies like me to even the notoriously complacent Democratic politicians and donors, are showing signs of being scared, because we fucking should be.

Maybe I'm huffing copium as the kids say but it does feel like there's a silver lining here that they're doing this not just because of assholes in the donor class, but because they're sensing the panic and determination among their constituents.

It's really bad. Rationally I still feel like most factors are in Biden's favor - even not calculating in Trump's other legal hurdles and the fact he'll probably be sentenced in September even with the Supreme Court's shenanigans - but my brain keeps "doompilling" me.

My therapist earned his pay trying to talk me down this week. And purely anecdotal but I feel like people are even *more* scared of this election's results than in 2020.

Once I missed a flight and had to take a later one, causing me to have to go to an academic conference the same day I arrived. I literally almost passed out at one point and I was in my 30s.

I like that theory, although I guess I'm a romantic because I still cling to the idea that it's an ancestral memory of the flood that created the Persian Gulf and displaced the ancestors of the Sumerians.

under the first Trump administration, white liberals liked to say “of course WE aren’t bearing the brunt of the policies, but…” the vibe now is that they are truly scared that they will finally experience the America that Native or Black people have always known lay beneath the one they loved

Clarification: I meant in any past parliamentary election. With more than 90% of seats now attributed, the Greens have won as many seats as Reform UK.

Glad and not surprised Cathode TV isn't doing the obvious and is instead doing a New Age mysticism/psychic theme, complete with vintage ads from psychic networks.

Also I know it's not canvassing but talking to people I know and finding they're as scared and outraged by things as I am, even if they don't agree with me on a lot, has given me hope and catharsis I've never achieved on political social media (and I know it's ironic to say that here).

Plus the recent Supreme Court decisions, which from my admittedly anecdotal experience even has the non-terminally online outraged and scared.

The "fun" thing about clinical depression is that it's real but it's an excuse even people who think of themselves as soft-hearted "IN THIS HOUSE" liberals won't buy. "So I almost forgot to pay rent because the news triggered a week-long depressive episode" doesn't play well.

And the absurdity of claims like young and black voters are defecting to Trump. It's just the nightmare, at least for me, is that things are so desperate and chaotic it's hard to tell when I'm just, as the kids say, doompilling or huffing copium and so easy to doubt my own judgment.

Yeah, aside from non-response bias being a big thing no matter what 365 says, I've noticed things like if you dig into the data Biden's numbers are better among likely voters and the unlikelihood of people in swing states coming out for the Dem Congressional candidates but not Biden in huge numbers.

“This amount of coalescing against the far-right by no means looked certain as of a week ago. While it can't just erase Macronists' extraordinarily equivocating 'pox on both houses' rhetoric during the campaign, it does make it a lot harder for the far-right to win on Sunday.”

Yeah, that is something I tell people. I grew up at the geographical heart of the Moral Majority, and with some big exceptions even some Republicans and evangelical Christians I grew up around had a "live and let live" attitude that when it clashed with their political views they dumped those views.

I've always felt like there was a scary moment in 2020 when they might have gone the way of the European right and support something like socialized health care while having a far-right social program, but aside from occasional anti-corporate murmurings they can't even do that much.

Yeah, my main source of optimism is how the ground isn't as fertile for them as it was for fascists in the mid-20th century. Even in deep red, impoverished areas they're still for the most part getting defeated over school boards and libraries.

That and, while the mid-20th century fascists were generally not the brightest people either, unlike these people they did at least have a sense of what normal people were thinking and actually had anxieties over.

I can agree with that myself, although I can see the rationale behind the argument that the non-response problem is worse, perhaps MUCH worse, with younger voters than with older ones for obvious reasons, and that would create more of a tilt in favor of Republicans.
