I knew about Paul Weyrich and his famous "you know, democracy ain't so great for our cause" line. I thought they were more fringe than they apparently are. Of course the GOP is all-fringe now, shoulda known they would be top influencers.

Since this election will come down to a few thousand votes in a few states (set the debate's impact aside for a sec) I wonder how many of the same libertarians who booed Trump might be compelled to actually vote for Biden because of this Immunity decision? Also wonder how many there are in the wild?

Yes. But at the same time, voters wouldn't stand for it. Democrats are held to a different standard than Republicans because we are selling two different products: change and the status quo, respectively. Change sucks, the unknown is risky, so the agents of change are put under a greater microscope.

Screw that, sentence him and let the Supreme Court deal with it.

Maybe so. I feel like a lot of permission and cover was given to awful people (and states) to act awfully when Roberts gutted the Voting Rights Act by (iirc) cynically pointing to Obama’s election as proof that it was no longer necessary.

Ironically this court is waging war against Nixon (who no less an authority than Noam Chomsky described as the last New Deal President) in some important ways, most notably gutting the EPA’s authority.

Similar to Dobbs being the product of a decades’ long project to overturn Roe.

From reading books like Evil Geniuses and Goliath, you learn that much of establishment conservatism has been an apologia for Watergate as much as an unraveling of New Deal economics. Bork was at the center of this. The immunity ruling is the cap of a decades’ project of vindicating Nixon.

When the Clock Broke seems to orbit that idea from what I've read so far.

I know it's crazy, but so was that ruling. Do we need to start engaging with the idea that this court is complicit in providing legitimacy to an autocratic regime? Specifically a Trump one? Or do they think the prospect is ridiculous? Or is it a vindication of Nixon and Jamelle suggests?

Yeah, I have to agree, it all goes back to Obama. That they elected (and nearly worship) the main Birther is not a coincidence. Electing a black man broke them.

@marklemley.bsky.social Is the Trump immunity ruling the exception that proves the rule, or does it fit in to your remarkable thesis is a way that eludes this layman?

to put a sharper point on this, the President’s power to pass an executive order regulating emissions is severely hampered. his power to use the DOJ or the military to regulate emissions is nearly unlimited

At some point today, in the middle of this weeklong sh*tstorm of awful news, please be sure to take a moment, close your eyes, inhale deeply, and repeat this sentence: "Steve Bannon is behind bars."

What is "it"? The idea that Biden had a terrible debate? Or the idea that Biden should step aside? Because I don't think many serious people are disputing the former. But you don't mention your friend calling for Biden to step aside in the anecdote, so I'm a bit confused.
