Every time I hear about things like beaches and mountains that are "owned" it makes me question "ownership" as a concept. I've generally leaned libertarian--but in a don't-hit-people-to-make-them-do-what-you-want way rather than a current-patterns-of-ownership-are-sacred way.

Well, in Brazil every beach is public. And if you find some gate keeping you from, you can demand access (doesn't always work, bu in most cases).

In Brazil all beaches are free and public Access. There are exceptions like Fernando de Noronha which have some justified restrictions.

Fun fact: my in-laws are from Lagos and that's a lot of people (hubs, siblings, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc) none of them can't swim, because there's no place with clean water for them to learn how to swim. And they're not even *that* poor in comparison.

YES but also no. Beaches should be private for environmental reasons and I guess some safety reasons only tbf. eg. Turtle Beaches. capitalists can get in the fucking sea imo

The entire Oregon coast is public land, and it surprised me when I learned that it's not that way in most other states with coastlines.

In Sweden we have something called Allemansrätten - translates to "All man's rights" Essentially the law states that you can own nature, but everyone can use it freely within certain limits. You can walk anywhere, pitch a tent, pick berries, or swim on a beach - but you can't chop trees or hunt.

The US actually has pretty broad protections under the navigable waters act, it sounds like they could use something like that over there.

This is one thing Alabama got right and Washington state gets dead wrong. Everything up to the high summer tide line is public. If water regularly touches it (storm surges don’t count) it is public.

used to go to Lagos' Bar Beach. It was a mess but a lot of fun with food and drink sellers, services eg nails, massages, pony rides, prostitution, small carousels, music, drugs, religious ceremonies, and people just coming to wash in the seawater. Infamous. I'd walk with $20 max. Was never robbed.

We had this fight with Trump in Ireland when he was trying to steal the beach in Doonbeg. I'm always perplexed when I'm somewhere abroad and don't have access to the beach, I never for a moment consider that access could be restricted.

A lot of people in Connecticut don't know that all beaches are free and public access up to the high tide line. People who have beachfront houses will claim to own their little section of beach, but there are no private beaches here.

Can’t read because of the paywall, but as a Nigerian, that money is going to about 5 pockets. We can’t even get consistent electricity and they still wanna charge for beach access. We had to pay a toll to get to Lekki Beach when I lived there in the late 80s. I can’t imagine the cost now.

This is actually law in the state of Georgia. All beaches in the state are public to the high tide zone by default and even private hotels usually have public access paths between them. I think it also applies to the banks of rivers, but I could be mistaken on that one.
