Importing this @volts.wtf thread from the bad place. It opens with a link to a piece that used official data to establish that yes, crime rates are indeed very much down recently. But here’s the thing, Project 2025’s Trump 2.0 promises to destroy that world in which we can “know” things like this.

That's an ongoing conservative theme. The Dickey Amendment was a success, not counting COVID deaths correctly worked out. No data means all decisions he made on doctrine, or on personal power.

I couldn’t agree more and people are worried about pocket change. That’s the least of our worries!

i'm glad to see someone making this point so clearly and forcefully. I read people talking about still having legal protections in the case of a Trump win, as if something as ephemeral as the law could withstand an assault on reality as we know it.

Remember how Trump floated the idea that Covid would go away if we just stopped testing for it? People treated that like it was Trump being dumb, but it was actually him articulating his quite savvy, authoritarian way of handling information. Want climate change to go away? Just stop measuring it!

Yes, and Republicans already have a fairly long track record of squelching the collection & publication of information that undercuts their agenda...since at least Reagan's presidency (when for ex it suppressed info about AIDs). Bush and Cheney made that one of their key methods. And Trump...sheesh

As a florida resident, the idea of eliminating or dismantling NOAA makes my hair stand on end. Category 5 hurricanes with no warning used to wipe out towns. On a totally unrelated note, thanks for the alt text 🥰🥰🥰🥰 but I'm terrified

HITLER: Joined with "Religion", got together with Industrialists, usurped the Media and corrupted the Courts of Germany. Result? The Third Reich Do you see any resemblance between Hitler's plan and the Trump MAGAT strategy for the RNP(REPUBLICAN NAZI PARTY)? It IS HAPPENING here! Red Hats=Swastikas.

It's precisely what was done in other totalitarian states. Venezuela has been arresting people for trying to report honest stats for nearly 20 years now. Hell, in around 2007 they arrested people for even taking pictures of overcrowded Caracas morgues that belied their bullshit crime stats.

Meanwhile, John Lott is promoting the idea that FBI crime data is already unreliable. Presumably to justify sending the National Guard into cities to fight a phantom crime wave.
