Sure, exercising the power to produce a worse outcome if one of the two gets elected. Shooting yourself in the foot is a great way exercise your power. Really top notch logic there.

for me the Biden conversation is entirely about whether he can win in November. i’m not worried about whether he can actually do the job because i don’t think it’s a real job.

Hoping this has some effect on support for the war back home. In the meantime, one less surviving vatnik is one less enemy for Ukraine. 👍

Thank you Borys. It does feel like a strange independence when the democracy we assumed would always exist, is challenged. I know the free world depends on us, and I hope we don't fall short. We are a fortunate country with many gifts that should be shared with like minded countries and peoples.

That's a nice twist, that he had the chance to correct them but didn't. It remains though that the NYT ran an actual false headline and never bothered to check the core truth of it.

This is seriously untrue in my experience, right here on this site. I've seen plenty on the left, usually of the progressive or socialist bent, that use the same monic "don't vote, they're all the same" rhetoric.

I don't know which is better, the idea that the author bamboozled the NYT to run this headline and they didn't bother checking the fundamental truth of it, or that the NYT picked it for the punchy vibe and they didn't check the fundamental truth of it. Either way, total faceplant.

Yah, I want to be able to ignore politics and not worry about bad shit happening, even when I am warned it's inevitable. Let someone else do the thinking and deciding. It makes me anxious. There's a new dysfunctional dystopia series on Netflix I need to watch.

I'm convinced that the Founders were smarter than anyone currently on the bench. I always assumed that studying the Constitution gave everyone a sense of humility and history. Appears not.

Just as fearlessness isn't "not having fear" it's "keeping going in spite of your fear" being hopeful isn't "being blind to the situation" it's "continuing to push despite the odds."

I would be very happy if part of Donald Trump's sentence in New York was requiring him to make a public reading, without edits, of today's 31 page decision for the disbarment of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, which debunks most of FPOTUS's claims of election fraud in 2020.

Going public with an experience like this is life-altering for a woman, so when you read these stories remember both the extraordinary amount of courage involved and also the likelihood that there are many others you’ll never hear.

The Court ruling today is terrible but expected. I will just gently remind everyone that the election hasn’t happened yet. We shouldn’t assume the worst outcome as a foregone conclusion. That only encourages more apathy than many are already feeling.

It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.

Fascists don't respect elections, but arguing that they did is important to them. I see. Please, take your handwringing and goalpost moving elsewhere. Do something to help defeat Trump instead.

It's easy to blame "the democrats". If there are "easy" things the D's "could have" done, then what are you doing to get them done? Running for office? Helping campaigns? Writing a letter a week? No, you're here writing about how fascists don't respect elections. Good work.

You write that fascists don't respect elections. Well then why are they even trying to win them?

Vote for people who will prevent creeping fascism. The major "plan" against fascists is to not allow them to gain power. Keep voting against them. There will always be fascists. It's the voters job, not "the democrats", to stop them.

That logic leads us to conclude elections aren't even needed, so they don't need to wait for the election, so they must be in power already. Yah, that's it.

I find myself thinking about how , upon Trump's first election, we were told by all the cool heads that were guardrails, norms, cabinet and staff, etc., that would hold him in check. Feels so... quaint.

If they were around in 2017-2021 and they're not merely trolling, then I'd say they're an imbecile. Even that wasn't true chaos, but it's the closest we've had in decades and it was plenty bad. What drivel.

The Jun 29 Bulwark podcast has a good, at times fiery, discussion on the topic. As you wrote, it's not a no brainer which way to go. But pretending it didn't happen will likely lose votes.

I made a hash of my point. I didn't mean to highlight the relative risk, but rather your response to the two things. You usually counsel calm and reason. It surprised me. I agree we shouldn't pretend Biden didn't fail miserably, but is whoever we might switch to any more "electable"? Is that smart?

If you spend any time thinking why someone exhibiting all of Trump's failures could still be standing, compared to politicians of our past, the inescapable conclusion is that he will never quit. Quiting is 100% guaranteed to end Biden's candidacy. If there's someone to replace him great.

What I find interesting about Tom's reaction is when Putin was threatening nuclear war after the full scale invasion of Ukraine it was one of calm and reason. Now he's repeatedly writing he's "worried" about Biden's electability. The end of the world is less bad than the end of our democracy?

Biden sucked. Panic isn't the answer. He's still better than a rapist and felon. Should the Democrats and his campaign take stock and learn? Yes. Panicking now though isn't helpful.
