Trump promising to deprive citizens of their citizenship.
Please don’t dismiss this with “Well, he can’t do that.” It would *probably* be invalidated by the courts but only after weeks, months, or years of ruining these citizens’ lives.
I won't say he can't do that we saw he couldn't see his utter failure re California sanctuary law, you're specifically talking about denaturalization. So instead I'm saying the doj has a high federal bar to clear.
Even if it were immediately stopped before any material harm, it serves a purpose as anti-immigrant propaganda in a similar way to "drag bans" that were blocked before they were enforced. "Wait, ARE men in dresses grooming our children in libraries??" wound up in the public consciousness anyway.
I don't think the electorate should evaluate policy proposals by campaigns by whether or not they are achievable. They should evaluate them by if they agree with them or not.
And that is if the right wing court that already is removing rights from citizens decides that this goes too far and he doesn't get to appoint more justices in the meantime that think this is fine.
And remember, anything they can do to another citizen of some disfavored group, they can do to YOU. If the precedent establishes that they can do it to a citizen it applies to any citizen.
I don't think people realize how great a threat and other plans, e.g. Project 2025, present. They seem obscure, sometimes they are difficult to understand unless you're a policy nerd, they aren't the sort of thing that gets people marching in the streets, etc. We can't sleepwalk through this.
If Generic Terrible Billionaire can destroy a media organization with frivolous lawsuits, what can a terrible Executive Branch with laws that are eventually overturned.
not to mention monopolizing legislative and oversight efforts on a new, urgent and valid concern, distracting from progress on real issues that are already priorities
And it will start with children of undocumented immigrants, but it won't end with them. They've said they're coming for birthright citizenship. Believe them.
